Mangalore: There is good news for regular long-distance, interdistrict and interstate commuters from the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC).
Effective Monday, June 18, bus fares on its Volvo, Volvo multi-axle and Rajahamsa buses will be slashed to considerable extent, so much so that its reduction is sure to give private operators a real 'run' for their money.

The quantum of reduction is as follows:
Mangalore-Bangalore Volvo Rs 550, reduced from Rs 640 Mangalore-Bangalore Rajahamsa Rs 400, reduced from Rs 450 Mangalore-Mumbai Volvo multi-axle Rs 950, reduced from Rs 1,500 Mangalore-Manipal Volvo Rs 75, reduced from Rs 80 Mangalore-Udupi Volvo Rs 70, reduced from Rs 80
The city division of KSRTC has recommended that the fare for daily pass for Volvo buses be reduced from Rs 140 to Rs 130. The higher-ups are likely to give their approval in a week's time.
However, speaking to Mangalorean.com, daily commuters felt that this was a temporary step to attract more passengers during the lean days of monsoons. Once the rains subside, the fares could be jacked up again, they said.
More good news
There are already two daytime Volvo multi-axle buses plying from here to Bangalore, leaving at 10 am and 11 am.
For the benefit of those completing their business and work in the city early and wanting to return to the state capital, another daytime multi-axle bus service has been introduced from June 16.
