Mangalore: In yet another case of mindlessly rash driving by the bus drivers in the heart of the city, a pedestrian was knocked by a speeding bus in front of Hotel Woodside and Amnesia Pub on Dr Shivarama Karanth Road in Balmatta around 11 am on Monday, June 18.

After a series of mishaps during the past week, the city seemed to open a fresh account for another round. A man, of age about 58 years, was walking by the side of the road from Dr Ambedkar-Jyoti circle towards Hampankatta. A speeding bus on route 44M bearing no. KA 19 B 6244 came on the extreme side over which interlocked blocks have been laid and knocked him down. He is said to have died on the spot.

His identity is not immediately known. The driver of the bus, obviously fearing public backlash and ire, fled the spot at once.

Speaking to our correspondent, many passersby wondered as to why the police and the RTO cannot rein in the rash and arrogant bus drivers. One of them said that the bus-owners do not care about the road safety but only about their collection.

Another one came out with a 'trade secret' saying that in many cases, the owners do not supervise the running of the day-to-day affairs, but give them to the drivers and conductors on lease. The owners get only the fixed amount at the end of the day, while the staff have a field day in collection matters.

It is for this reason that there is always competition between buses. Very often physical fights also ensue in the matter of timings. It is because of the worry of the staff for daily collection that they keep fighting with each other and not out of any loyalty to the owners, he said.

Over two dozens of police interceptor vehicles are operating in and around the city every day. Citizens wonder as to why buses are hardly booked for speeding and other traffic violations.

An office-goer said sarcastically that the interceptors are meant only to catch two-wheelers and autorickshaws.

The report says that there are over two dozen of police interceptor vehicles controlling the traffic in Mangalore--But I bet that the people operating these interceptors are very much funded by the owners/drivers of these buses, so why would they harass the bus management. As I have noticed the cops in Mangalore are useless--you see them, instead of controlling the traffic and the commuters, they are bust yapping on their cellphones, or at a panipur vendor enjoying free bhelpuri or having a quick drag at a smoke shop. If the cops dont change their attitude then road life in Mangalore will still be a death valley. Sometimes you have to blame the commuters for not follwing the road rules--instead of walking on the footpath you see people walking on the roads like animals. Even at the Hampankatta signal lights area people are just wandering around on the road like they are at a "Jatra"--and the lovely police Inspectors and constables at the scene simply are numb, not to bother to restore law and order. Traffic rules should be tough with severe fines/jail term, if not we will be seeing more accident deaths/rash driving etc etc again and again. If Guinness Book Of World Records has a new category as 'The World's worst police personal'--then I bet the answer will surely be--"India", and ofcourse mangalore to be part of it. Period

The good thing about Mangaloreans is that they dont burn the buses when there is a death of innocent pedestrians. In other parts of Karnataka (especially Kolar/Bangalore/Mysore), the bus will be burnt immediately by the mob.

How can the police CATCH the bus drivers the bus owners lobby is stronger than the POLICE
Vinayak, UAE Jun 18, 2012
This is height of anything. RTO issues permit with a span gap of 2 - 3 minutes and the drivers & conductors are forced for rampage driving, which off course is causing innocents lives. These drivers take the steering from being a cleaner. Hence no sense of safety is been observed. They only know how to ram into others. Once knocked then they disappear. A valuable live is gone, but who will lead the misery of the lost family ?

Dear readers,

Suspended the drivers licence for one year and owners operators licence as well.Ask the driver to pay blood money to the victims kin.

we can not blame only the bus drivers here because here the RTO system itself is not profer and RTO officials are busy in catching poor auto, 2,3 wheelers and fining them (money making busines). in such case who will observe signals or busses ?
here we need to change the system then control over speed and private busses.

Our RTO police are not doing anything against the bus owners or drivers and our bus drivers are experts in bus driving which is they want to show. secondly they want collection to fill their poket and owners purse so who cares for the pedestrian?
Dexter, UAE Jun 18, 2012
The impact and the dent very evidently shows that the bus was travelling at high speeds.

Is the RTO waiting for some more deaths by way of road accidents? If RTO is strict, then these kind of accidents can be reduced. I won't be surprised if RTO guys are hand in glouse with these bus owner's or driver or conductor's for extra income. Hope now atleast RTO will get up from their deep sleep.

Now a days all the breaking news that we get to hear from Mangalore is about accidents, deaths, injuries, property damage, drowning, suicide, thefts etc., No value for human lives, no ethics, no civic sense... just a jungle raj...might is right policy.

I am surprised as to whether anybody cares about law and order or whether the system is at all functioning. Looks like the RTO and other authorities concerned to monitor the system are enjoying the horrifying incidents. I don't know when this blame game will end and Mangalore city becomes a safe place for leading a normal life.

Praying for heavenly intervention.
