Mangalore: A Maroli Travels bus no. 43A plying to Talapadi from the city rolled off the road and fell into a deep gorge at Kallapu around 11 am on Wednesday, June 27.

About twenty passengers have been injured in the mishap. The nature of injuries is not immediately known. They are being treated in Netaji Yellappa, Sahara and Fr Muller hospitals.

The driver of the bus was competing with another bus on route no. 42 and had gone far on the edge of the road, said a passenger, Harish, to our correspondent. The soft mud gave way and the bus rolled off the road and crashed into the compound wall of Kanachur wood industry's plant.

Asked if the passengers did not ask the driver to take care while driving, one passenger said out of frustration, "We know the nature of these drivers. No way to talk to them". They are at the helm and we are at their mercy, another passenger said.

They said they were lucky to be unhurt, considering the nature of fall. Many passers-by too felt that it was beyond comprehension how so many could escape unhurt. However, reports from the hospital are awaited.

By seeing the photographs we can realize the speed of the bus and the carelessness of the driver. He played with so many innocent lives.

The law should be strict to such drivers and a heavy penalty will be imposed on those who play with the people.

"I never travel by private buses from BC Road to Mangalore" - Reshmi Salian

You remind me of my father who always tells me to take only KSRTC buses, not the private buses!! smiles...

On a serious note, where are our Police? Speeding is quite common and what are they doing to stop it ?

So many permits have been issued to buses to ply on some routes and also timing restrictions have been put on bus drivers. This has led to the overspeeding of buses. Morever the owners give these buses on contract to these bus crew who then try to make their daily earnings by hook or crook.
Irony is that after 9.30 in the night there is hardly any bus or auto in most of the places in mangalore. Why not stagger the bus timings or make them operate in shifts or different time slots so that it is profitable for them and also benificial for the general public.

An incompetent police force means that this will continue to happen again and again. The common man has to suffer

Prompt and speedy coverage with excellant photographs by Violet maam which tells the true story of the gory recklessness of the driver that too within the city routes of Mangalore. A biting fine of Rupees 100000 should be slapped on the Driver which will send a strong message to all the other city bus as well as long-distant drivers.

Overspeeding...risking the life of passenger's. These bus driver's..oh no. It is better to cancel the licenses of all these private buses and introduce KSRTC buses. These private buses, due to too much of competition, resort to racing in order to satisfy their ego. I never travel by private buses from BC Road to Mangalore. I always travel by KSRTC buses as they are safer compared to private buses.
