Manipal, June 30: Dr V Surendra Shetty, Dean Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangalore has been made Pro Vice Chancellor of Manipal University, Manipal with effect from July 1, 2012. He will be in charge of the Mangalore campus of the University and will oversee its development.

Dr Shetty’s association with the Manipal group started in 1965 when he joined the first batch in the College of Dental Surgery, as MCODS was then known. It is the first private dental college in India. He completed the course 1970 with flying colors, bagging the Dr T.M.A. Pai Blue Ribbon Gold Medal for the best outgoing student. He also won the state award for topping the B.D.S. exams in the University of Mysore.
He then had a short stint as faculty before pursuing Masters in orthodontics in the same institution. He joined the first batch of MDS in orthodontics in 1972. After completing MDS in 1974 he worked at K.M.C Mangalore and at the government Wenlock Hospital until 1987.

In 1987 January he was appointed as the Director of the newly started Manipal College of dental sciences in Mangalore, the second dental college of the Manipal group. He has been heading the college as Director/Principal/Dean for more than over 25 years from inception till date.

He was an executive committee member of the Dental Council of India from 1998 to 2003, and a member of the selection committee for the W.H.O scholarship in the year 1998. He served as the chairman government task force committee to review private dental colleges in Karnataka. At present he is a member of the technical committee NABH for dental centers.

He has served various organizations in positions of responsibility. He is the past president of Indian dental association South Kanara District. He was the President of the Indian orthodontic society 1995, the chairman Indian Board of Orthodontics 2008-2009.

MCODS Mangalore will remain as one of the best Dental colleges in INDIA.

As the pro vice chancellor of Manipal university, the former Dean will have larger responsibilities and his experience in administration for the past 25 years will be a boon to the Manipal Group of Institutions.
