Kundapur : Selkod-Hulipare in Jadkal Grama Panchayath witnessed a gory incidence where more than 200 trees were felled overnight on July 14, causing a loss of one crore.

The Deputy commissioner and  SPs were adamant that they wouldn't make provision of roads for the villagers, which lead to the villagers clearing the trees and then admitting their guilt in the matter.

This was earlier informed to the villagers as DC firmly believed that there was involvement and inter-dependence amongst all the villagers when it came to felling of trees combined overnight.

According to sources, 25 accused have surrendered themselves to Kollur police, 15 accused have surrendered themselves to Kollur Wildlife Range and the remaining 10 to the Forest Department.

The surrendered villagers who have been produced before the Judge, Kundapur Court, were released on bail.  Various charges have been filed against these villagers. The Judicial Magistrate has released the accused on conditional bail appeal.

If at all severe punishment would have been meted out to the Malyalees who had cleared 2 kms of pristine reserve forests to build a road from Siddapur to Muddur in 1980s, it would have served as a deterrent for others. But in a lawless society, we cannot expect this. We are so selfish.
