Mangalore: The DK District Congress Committee with the leadership of KPCC Secretary Ivan D'Souza staged a protest in front of the Passport Office, Kodialbail here on July 17.
Addressing the protesters Ivan D'Souza said that the service in the passport office is very poor and there is lack of basic amenities for the people who come there to apply for new passport and other related services. He further said that, there is no proper seating arrangements, the queue is sometimes so long, people stand in queue outside the office in the hot sun and rain for very long hours. Some of them unable to bear the heat, and or getting wet in the rain go to the nearby petrol pump and take shelter.

The office is handled by inefficient staff who have very less knowledge about computers. The staff are even unable to help and guide the applicants to apply for passport online. Some of the office staff are said to be misusing the office.
He further said that, people come here to collect the token at 5 a.m and wait till 2 p.m outside the office. Everyday the office is giving 450 applications which can be increased to 600 if suitable amenities are provided by the concerned authorities. Women with their infants and senior citizens coming here for passport related services have to wait in the queue for long hours outside the office.
He also demanded the passport office be shifted to the DC office or Taluk office premises because of space constraints here. The congress party will not tolerate the present situation faced by the people at the passport office. We have warned the concerned authorities to shift the passport office, and if shifting the office to a different location is not possible, then let them provide all the basic amenities to the people who come to the present location. He also said that this is the last warning from the congress party.
The copy of the memorandum will be sent to the Union External Affairs Minister S M Krishna. There was a small clash between the police and the protesters when the protesters tried to enter inside the passport office.
Many party leaders like Shashidhar Hegde, Ashraf, T K Sudhir, Youth congress president Mithun Rai, Praveen Alva, Corporator Gretta Rebello and others were also present. | |

Central Government must place uniform facilities in all passport offices. There must be a rule to provide certain set of amenities which must be made mandatory in all passport offices , irrespective of their size and locality. Since passport offices are visited by foreigners also care will have to be taken that it will not harm the image of our country.
Of course to change the mentality of government staff, it is expecting too much from them! |

| First I thought this was a new ration shop where people standing in the queue had come to collect their rations.Either provide more facilities or change location with adequate facilities. |

It is funny to see Gretta Rebello is worried about Passport Office while She is not worried about the problems in Her ward. A person cannot even walk to Mangalore ONE office in KUDCEMP -MCC building because entrance area is like rice field. Sewer water was flowing for days and still it was flowing.
Ivan D'Souza is not worried about a hole on the roadside near His office where little children from St.Aloysius School can fall into it. This hole is there for days and a garden is growing in that hole as precaution.
Youth Congress member cry foul about Passport office without enough chairs. How about Property Tax prepare area in the Basement of MCC Building where 50 % of the Chairs are broken and many without Back rest and broken armrest.(there is a chair with 3 legs too). Tax preparing girls are ashamed of the condition of furniture they use. for sitting and to write. |
