Puttur: Anita Kumaraswamy, Madhugiri MLA and wife of former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, was expected to be the chief guest at the 5th annual Shri Varamahalakshmi Pooja here on Friday.

The event, like the last few years, was organized by Swabhimani Vedike president and former MLA Shakuntala Shetty. She went out of her way to assert that she had not invited Anita as a prelude to her (Shakuntala's) joining the JD(S).

Finally, Anita did not turn up at all. Instead, JD(S) state president reportedly sent a huge gift of 5,000 saris to the organizers, to be distributed to all the women who attended the Pooja.

The saris were distributed to the womenfolk along with prasad. Obviously to make up for the absence of Anita, her photograph and JD(S) party symbol was printed on the packaging in which each sari was handed over.
