| | Udupi: Janardhan Poojary Condemns Police for Booking Cases Against Journalists |
 |
|
| | Published Date: 30 Jul, 2012 (11:35 PM) | | Report by Michael Rodrigues Pics by Flavin D’Souza Shirva Team Mangalorean Udupi
Udupi: B. Janardhan Poojary, Senior Congress Leader has come down heavily upon the police for registering cases against the media for reporting the attacks by Hindu Jagarana Vedike at the 'Morning Mist' in Padil where students were holding a birthday celebration in Mangalore.
Addressing the media persons, Poojary at a press meet in the Congress Bhavan, described what happened in Mangalore has monstrous. Moreover, over the reporting done by TV reporters, the police are up in arms against them, this itself is subjugation, another raid by itself, he claimed. Media has the role to play to bring before the people nefarious activities going around us. If anyone tries to thwart its freedom, the survival of democracy itself is difficult, he said.

To hide the failure of police, they are plotting to target the press. Knowing very well what was happening, police are maintaining that they were not informed of the matter, and are blaming the press, this misadventure will not be tolerated, he said. Kasturi Channel Reporter Navin Surinje on receiving a stranger's call, went to the location to find out what was happening. Sensing something terrible was going to happen, he called the Police, who infact didn't react to his call. What had happened on Saturday in Mangalore was a perfectly pre-conceived, pre-planned macabre event. Police remained like a puppet when the Hindu Jagarane Vedike activists were stripping off the girls clothes and trying to project them semi-nude, which is indicative of the total failure of police department itself. Such instances are threatening of a democracy. Police attitude of blaming reporters at a time when they were going around doing their job, knowing very well of their duties is heinous, subjugating and condemnable, he said.
Seemanth Kumar, Mangalore Police Commissioner taking objections to the visuals transmitted in the media, is condemnable. They should have rewarded the media for their job, instead plotting to register cases against them is saddening. Today for facilitating free and fearless enquiry of the media, over the threats that they are facing, the Police should provide suitable protection to them. CT Ravi, the Minister -in- charge of the District has onerous duty and responsibility to discharge his duty most suitably. Dakshina Kannada has all communities and different culture here. If you act to hurt their self worth, people will never excuse you, he asserted.
Navin Soorinje, is a bold reporter against whom the case is registered, he is the one who despite his efforts invited police attention, but they did not respond. Rajesh Rao, Sharan, Vinayakrishna including Navin Soorinje would be awarded a cash prize of Rs 10,000/- during Dasara on behalf of Gokarnanath Kshetra. This job should have been done by the police, but we are doing it on behalf of our Kshetra. Actually the media has facilitated the tracing of the culprits against their crime to the Police, the miscreants should be punished under Goonda act, he exhorted.
Pramod Madhwaraj, Udupi Block Congress President ; District Congress President Gopala Poojary; Former Zilla Panchayath President Raju Poojary; Congress leaders like Harikrishna Bantwal, Harish Kini, Diwakara Kunder, Bhasker Rao Kidiyoor, Ashok Kumar Kodavooru, Narisimha Moorthy, Kallige Tharanath Shetty; Arun Kuvello, Sanjeeva Moily were present in the Press Conference. | |

I can understand your feelings as a women.
Do you know the real politics of coastal Karnataka?????
If you knew it you would have never spoken like this to Mr. Poojary.
There are many incidence in Coastal Karnataka where such kind of attack took place, girls got molestated but it went unnoticed and even girls did not come forward. This will continue forever.
I myself don't support parties, I am against it but peaceful protest is required against it. Nobody has right to take law in hand. Slapping Girls, dragging them is not Hindu Culture. Sri Krishna Paramatma will never forgive those who have assaulted girls.

In Coastal Karnataka even if you call police or inform police they will never respond because everything will happen preplanned by Sangh Parivar. Poor Policeman if they take any action they will be scrutinized by Sangh Parivar.

Ajay,
All are aware that journalists are NOT Police and what they do for a living. Do not consider that they are doing any favours to anyone . They want to earn a living and choose to do this job.
In PADIL GATE incident the subject journalists have done a good job of recording the evidence. No one denies that. Shriman Janardhana Poo jary has gone a step ahead and announced cash award . Thereby he is setting standards for the journalists to record the scene ,even if it is rape of minor female. Joiurnalists job is well done and none should ask him or her what did you do to stop it. Is that what you are saying.
Ajit you live in USA , for any emergency you call 911 and I am sure you know what happens after that. India - Mangalore- too has this kind of service.
Can you imagin the public support and Appreciation of the journalsts ?? May be Barath Ratna Awards. IF and Only IF THEY COULD Get the police on the scene on time or at least prove beyond reasonable doubt that they had paced this call to alert the police AS SOON as the
Padil Confidential Informant them the news. They could have recorded the incident without fear because the attackers were all drunk - in their own words.
How s that in spite of not knowing what us going down they went to right place for the action to begin.
It was Lighs, Camera ,Action.
People like Janardhana Poojary can see reason to award them in this case. He appears only after such incidents not knowing that he is date expired Medicine and a dull pencil ,No Point.
Ajit You say journalists had inside information, they went there and brought information for us to see. At what cost? Can you imagin the agony of those victims and their families.
If this had to happen to any of your family members, male or female what would be your opinion ??
If you can please watch a old Hindhi movie titled "New Delhi Times" starring Jitendra.
Why blame the door mats of the politicians?

For those who criticize journalism, think hard.
Journalists are not the police, they are there to give the facts. Journalists cover war, famine, floods, hijackings and several such tragic situations without interfering with what is happening. Journalism is the eye of society, it is not a profession in law and order or welfare. Journalists do not go to a war zone and try to stop killing there, or go to a flood zone to rescue people from drowning. They go there to report on what is going on to society.
The journalist who took the video may have known in advance that this was going to happen so he went there. The BJP members who where doing this wanted publicity so they used him and may be asked him to come over. There are journalists who have interviewed Bin Ladin. You could always ask why didnt the journalist kill him, instead of interviewing him. Journalists take a lot of risks to bring us the facts and we should appreciate that.
For the police to go after the journalist, it to poke the eye of society. The police in the coastal districts have failed miserably in reigning in the lumpen elements of Sangh Parivar, which have grown like parthenium in the last 2 decades, so they are pointing their fingers at anyone except themselves to cover their failure.
While I think it is stupid to reward the journalist, this incident is not the fault of a journalist, this is 100% a failure for the police in our district.
The journalist had inside information, knew what was going on and went there brought out the truth for us to see. If not we would not believe what is going on and this issue would have been swept under the carpet.
Due to what this journalist did 15 people are now arrested and hopefully some stern action will be taken on this sangh parivar menace.
I sometimes wonder if Mangalore has lost its mind, trying to blame a journalist for the event he is reporting. |

| Mr Poojary, don't you feel shame when you announce the reward to 4 journalist, who sold their mothers, sister self respect to the world. Shame on you, I want to ask you, if your daughter or any of your family member was present at the resort and molested by the goons, assaulted and the cameramen showed the live coverage to the world, Would you rewarded them or answer me. At this age supporting the wrong people doesn't look good to you. Try to understand what is the meaning of women and their respect, then you reward. |

| Mr.Poojary, don't meddle with police enquiry proceeding and demoralise them by criticising. What police have done is perfectly right. If the media persons who were on the site informed the police, the heinous crime would not have happened.I condemn you politicians coming forward in stalling the enquiry and trying to protect the media persons who are involved. Please stop giveing nonsense statements and allow the police to do their duty. Please try to understand the public mood. |

Poojary has gone nuts and does not know what he speaks. Would he have supported the media if in case the same would have had happened to his wife, children, grand children and relatives?
Media was the main culprit and so those journalist have to suffer the consequences of encouraging such inhuman acts. |

Don't agree with Janardhan Poojary here. He hasn't done his homework!
Agree, there are many journalists who have respect for society and ethics. They work as an important player in the modern society.
But there are also those who work in the journalistic world, especially the freelancers, whose only motive is sell the stories to the newspapers, TV channels, and now it seems even to the web media. These are entirely a commercially driven lot. Each exciting story can bring several lakh rupees.
So, I won't be surprised if some of these journalists emply their close friends to help them out in creating a sensational story.
The other day it was Guwahati, and then in Mangalore.
If the journalists are dealth with severely, half the sensational events from the society will disappear overnight. Unfortunately, the law and the police are just too slow to deal with these journalists. |

Mr. Poojary being a Lawyer, he should know better. The molested/raped girls hardly come forward to file complaint because of our judiciary system.
During the trial, the Lawyers strip those ladies naked of their dignity once again by cross-examining them in front of the huge crowd including media. Now what is the use of recorded evidence?
The journalists must follow some ethics and good judgement when it comes to voilence against women and children. Look at the birthday boy in the video. He was beaten severely; yet, he was pleading those goons not to beat the girls. He is a gentleman.
If the cameraman is a gentleman, by his own instinct, he would have try to stop them from beating unless the cameraman is one among those "slumdogs
"
Let's pray for the men in the history who have shown their gentlemenship in protecting women and children by sacrificing their own lives!

Another stunt by Janna Anna, supposed to be a lawyer who takes an oath to protect and uphold law and practice law of the Land.
The joint enquiry shall bring out the truth. Janna Anna what is your opinion about the Assam molestation of a young girl and resignation if Media reporters/camera man? Could this have been avoided?? R to be awarded?
As a citizen even the media person has a responsibility to protect fellow citizen - check your common law doctrine.
You are only encouraging this to gain politically. You know that the police should have been informed, with all the will and intentions as soon as it was known to the media. 6.30 in the evening thre are plenty if police with wireless radios everywhere on the streets Mangalore.
Janna Anna , this s not moral policing, it s a business. sell fear and also sell protection at the same time. Those who do not buy the cure suffer!!!!.
Acoording to a news source in India, Subash Padil was a member of Rama Sena who attacked Amnesia Pub. His business idea of extortion thru moral policing did not go far with Rama Sena, and now he issuing this platform
same news source reports that both Subash and Ganesh got admitted to KMC mangalore and owe the hospital 20K .
How come all this is not reported in Mangalore?
Janna Anna , if you are a protector of democracy, how come there is not a statement about the victims?? what appended to their rights??
It seems you are telling the police why they are wrong.
Are you condoning the acts of the attackers?
Being a lawyer something better is expected out of you.
Work hard to get justice to the victims and their families.
Do not vanish till next incident, just to reappear to avail political mileage

Everyone is trying to milk from the tragedy, it is like American media still milking 9/11.
People should avoid getting sucked into the politics and secure their own belongings and family members, I beleiev Indians do have the right to bear arms as per the constitution and people should start exercising that right.
"All citizens have the right to bear arms for protection if there is a considerable threat to the life of that citizen, but arms can only be bought after getting an arms license from authorities."
