| | Udupi: Pejawar Seer Opposes UPCL Installing Second Thermal Power Unit |
 |
|
| | Published Date: 07 Aug, 2012 (11:12 AM) | | Report by Michael Rodrigues Team Mangalorean Udupi Udupi: Pejavar Seer, who is presently in Chennai observing 'Chaturmasya' has opposed the opening of Second Unit of Udupi Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) Thermal power unit in Nadikoor near Padubidiri.

" When I staged a hunger-fast last January protesting against the damage being done to the locals in the area due to the Thermal Power Unit, Dr. VS Acharya, the Minister then, and CM DV Sadananda Gowda had promised that all the problems would be solved. Without solving problems, now they are planning to install a Second unit, this has created strong opposition from the public there. This is improper from a humane angle. Without taking measures to get rid of the environmental pollution, government must not open 2nd unit ", the Swamiji said.
We have suggested several remedial measures providing the report collected from experts, government didn't take any measures regarding this. Now that the government is again to its same strategy, I request all the Coastal people to protest this plan peacefully. September 30, being the time the Chaturmasya Vruth ends, after that I will take part in the agitation, said Pejavar Seer. | |

It is not just the question of Jasmine plants. The damage done to the locals because of the previous thermal plant at Padubidri is heart throbbing. First of all a whole village has been lifted. I do not know how many of us have any idea of the gravity of such a phenomena. Swamiji's protest here is not just about this one thermal power plant or another. He is opposing this whole idea of which Nandikoor and padubidri are just instances. It is happening here, in Andhra, Orissa and all across the country. When a whole village is lifted like that the feeling of ungroundedness that swells in the hearts of those residents is very intense and inexplicable in words. The outcome of this is going to be disastrous. In fact we have lessons from recent history about this. Yes, the Southern Africa. Recent studies have shown that the overwhelming crime rate there (you could be murdered just for your shoe, You cannot just go out in the evenings)is exactly because of displacing communities that have lived together from many many years in the name of industrialization and other such purposes of so called progress. The ethical and moral basis of such a community is very much founded on their mutual relationships, responsibilities and answerabilities and even to some extent their feelings for their surroundings, the mountains, the trees, the fields and water streams. They would have taken birth and grown up with all of that.None of the cor[porate ******** can imagine the damage they are doing when they displace such a community. Does anyone know how difficult it is to put together a community like that Nowadays? It is almost impossible. Bloody, in the next house if someone dies you would only know when the body rots and stinks in the cities. No one even bothers to talk to each other. They have no idea the damage they are doing. Here is where I disagree with the Swamiji. Peaceful anything will not be understood today. Because they are no more human beings . They are all *** mongers greedy for complacent comfortable cozy high tech life.
So many people depended only on well water for their living and their agriculture. The well water is all poisoned now because of the Padubidri thermal power plant. Where should they go. Even if you give them some money how long will it last. They are deprived of their way of living, their neighbours, their occupation.
Their pig headed ideas of modernization and industrialization and employment have done enough harm to us from the time Nehru began to pollute Ganga and Yamuna. Today Ganga and Yamuna are so polluted. They were at the heart of the good feelings of all people in the country. Yamuna today is a dead river. See what has happened to Delhi and the surrounding cities. The same as in Chennai. Kuvam river is dead. Once it used to be a beautiful river, a pure source of water and a boating resort even in the time of the British. Now who can restore it. It smells so bad from miles. These are acts of self destruction that we bloody Indians have inflicted on ourselves.
I definitely do not want that to happen with Dakshina Kannada. I would say let us not wait till September 30th when Swamiji is wanting to start his agitation. |

| It is sad to note that the BJP Govt. has backtracked on the assurance given to Swamiji. Government has no concern for the peoples problems and needs. Agitation or no agitation, government and the UPCL are bent on destroying the ecology and local peoples agriculture including famous Jasmine plants. Assurances will never serve the purpose. What is needed is cancellation of the Licence given to UPCL.All people of coastal district should unite and support Swamiji to make the Government bend on the issue. My best wishes for the success. |

These people do not encourage progress and employment. If there is more unemployment, it will benefit him.
This man wants cheap publicity.
