Mangalore: City Bar-n-Pub Business Going Downhill After ' Home Stay ' Attack

Mangalore: The bar and restaurant (B and R) business, and also at some favorite pubs in the coastal city of Mangalore has been drastically hit, following the recent attack by Hindu activists on young revellers at a birthday party. According to some owners of the B & R sector, they have witnessed a similar kind of business crisis after the attack on a pub on Balmatta Road by some activists in 2009.

The city does not have any exclusive discotheques like Bangalore or Goa, where parties go on till wee hours, but there are few good B and R, which serve liquor, varieties of cuisines and play vivid western music. Youths hang out in these places to sway for music played in these joints.

According to the owner of a B and R chain, that ever since July 28th incident, 40% of the business had come down as people were scared to visit B and R. Business had declined after the attack on a pub in 2009 and it took one year for business to get back to being normal. But this time business is likely to pick up within a few months as people have condemned the unpleasant act strongly, he added."Is it a man's world? Don't women have any right to involve in social occasions?" has commented this owner.

According to Joseph, a employee at a trendy pub and music joint in Valencia, " Business has been OK, but could have been much better. There is a slight decline in the clients, but business is picking up slowly. What happened at 'Home Stay' is senseless, the incident has created some fear in the wine-n-dine folks who usually spend their social evenings by going out to.....!"

Yet another manager at a pub in the City, who doesn't want to reveal his name says, " Although ours is a pub, it doesn't mean that youth and adults just  come in here only to drink and get drunk, that's a wrong impression that the community has. We serve good cuisine, from Coastal, continental and Chinese, so youngsters come and dine here. Many of them don't even consume alcohol, they just order food and soft drinks. These days I am really missing some of our regulars, decent and respected young crowd"

The owner of another popular pub and eatery joint, who did not want to disclose his name, has said business has drastically declined to 50-60%. People are scared, especially women, because the entire City, nation and beyond has seen victims taken in a police van while culprits are seen roaming freely after the incident. When will these goons learn how to behave? What are they accomplishing by their acts, anyhow? Mangaloreans should stand up and fight against all these attacks on innocent people.

Well, it is hard to believe that the business has gone down by 50% – 60%. Usually Indian business men have the habit of understating their business to hide the true wealth. Also, it helps them avoid some of the ‘hafta’ to regular thugs and Police!! However, it is possible that business from younger, college crowd has gone down due to the recent unfortunate attacks. My recommendation to these businesses is to employ security guards to fight any future attacks from thugs and provide protection to their customers! Any ciolation of private property rights should be handled with zero tolerance.

Mr R Nayak, a deliberate attempt has been made by people like you or out of ignorance to link homestay with brothels and drugs.

You go to any place for a visit, business or holiday and the first thing that you want is shelter. Any hotel you go will provide alcohol either in the hotel premises or mini bar within your room itself. Anywhere you will find youngsters partying. Youth comes just once and the phase will also pass one day.

What was immoral or unethical with youngsters partying with beer? These youngsters were grown ups and they were partying in privacy not in public.

Barring 1 or 2 countries, alcohol is widely available in groceries and supermarkets. Drugs on the other hand is considered a serious crime in all the countries with serious punishment.

You just cannot compare the two.

Booziness will be back to normal once Ramzan Aati and astami is over !!!

I am sure you will agree that our district’s economy should not flourish with immoral and unethical activities. If that is the case then let us have night clubs, cabaret joints, casinos or even brothels, legally, where every person can enjoy his or her life and not like the present situation where a few enjoy life in the name of freedom of living, individual liberty, women’s lib etc., Does our district has to provide females for illegal flesh trade by outsiders ? Why don't you start the above mentioned pleasure joints so that each Mnaglorean can enjoy his or her life freely. Shame.

K R Rao - For your info - Licences for B & R's are given by the Government as it is a 'LEGITIMATE BUSINESS" - Further, you need to see a shrink to conclude that I am a Kangi supporter - ; Not only am I a hard core fan of AB Vajpayee, but have also contributed to the BJP coffers as I run a very succesful B&R resteraunt business in Mumbai. Keep your prejudiced views to yourself and have a peg as it may enlighten your closed mind set. Don't use this forum to cast aspersions on people you have not see or known.

Dear readers

The Bar and Rest. association kindly take the advice of the bloggers to appoint some bouncers form Hindu Jagarna Vedike,Bajrang Dal,Ram Sene and Abihnav Bharth. You don't need to pay salary or Hafta. All you need to do is give sample bottles at the end of the shift, they will drink and hang till the next shift.
No more attacks under cultural police and your business will be boom again.

"B & R owners - Keep a couple of BOUNCERS in the premises - none of the Dogs will dare enter ; these "petists" thrive bcuae of political patronage and act with the power of a couple of cheap drinks"
Santhu!
He looks like a pure Kangi supporter since he supports this culture! He wants every one to drink expensive drinks so that B & R owners will benefit from it.
Double standards are the hall mark of these supporters. It is quite normal for these people to encourage these vices of drinking and dancing till wee hours. But they have no right to encourage the B&R owners at the expense of innocent kids of others who fall prey to it.
How come these secularists pretend as if they are descendants of Mahatma Gandhi( who was totally against alcohol consumption) and at the same time support alcoholism? What kind of ideology is this?
Santhu, India Aug 8, 2012
B & R owners - Keep a couple of BOUNCERS in the premises - none of the Dogs will dare enter ; these "petists" thrive bcuae of political patronage and act with the power of a couple of cheap drinks, strenghten themselves with Meat and act as Warriors. Once hammered they will dare not show their faces. How many of you have gone to court or complained to the Cops when thse people have barged in and helped themseves to free drinks ?? I am told that drinks and food are given to these goons by the cheaper B&R as "haftha" ????
POOJA, India Aug 8, 2012
We are not here to promote bar....Its good, people are stopped visiting bar that means illegal drink by boy & girl is been stopped ...this should be appreciated ....we have to ban drinks completly that should be our target ...(like Gujarat ) ....Bar owners run the bar but they dont drink they only know to spoil the youngsters ...First it will start has a entertainement with friends then goes beyond their limit ....I apprecaite the Boys who attacked the Pub & recent homestay due to that atleast the youngsters are saved......If it is wrong or right........
Robin, India Aug 8, 2012
