Mangalore: Wear 'Bangles' and Sport 'Bindi' On Campus, V V S Implements Rule

Team Mangalorean

Mangalore: Here is yet another  story coming once again from a educational institution implementing certain rules on staff and students. We have seen and heard earlier about few educational institutions who had imposed ban on wearing burqa and Hijab (Head Scarf) in classroom, and the fight on that issue is still going on.Even before the furore created by a ban on burqa and hijab in classrooms could die down, an educational institution in Dakshina Kannada district has stirred a hornet's nest by mandating women - students, teachers and staff - to wear bangles and sport bindi on campus.

It is learned now that the administrative board of Vivekananda Vidyavardhaka Sangha (VVS), Puttur, which runs several institutions, has implemented a new rule making it mandatory for its women students, women teachers and staff to wear bangles and sport ' bindi ' on campus. The VVS board has circulated a notice directing the heads of its institutions to ensure the decision is enforced strictly. Added to this, the May 25 notice mandates that uniform should be compulsory, and women must wear bangles and tilak on the premises. Apart from that, the administrative board has directed the institution heads to implement the diktat from the next academic year.

According to report from VVS management states that the rules have been introduced to ensure discipline on the campuses. Rules regarding uniform are compulsory in all VVS institutions. Wearing bangles and tilak is not a compulsory rule. Girls and women staffers from other religions may take their own decision. Action against such women who do not wear bangles and tilak will not be taken

According to sources, the decision of Vivekananda Vidyavardhaka Sangha has drawn flak. Federation of Rationalists Associations of India president Narendra Nayak has said nobody can impose religious symbolism on another. "If this is allowed, then tomorrow Christian and Muslim institutions' managements will introduce their rules," he added.

Shameera Jahan, deputy coordinator of the women's wing of Jamaate-Islami Hind, called the VVK directive an attack on religious freedom. "They cannot make wearing bangles and tilak compulsory in institutes where students belong to different religions study. There are many institutions run by Muslim managements in the district where burqa is uniform. They allow students of other religions to wear the dress of their choice." Writer and progressive thinker Sara Aboobaker said imposing religious practices on others will amount to violation of the Constitution. "If the institute makes the rule mandatory, it's condemnable."

But as of now, VVS management is not backing down on their decision on this new rule. Until then,we all will have to wait and see what will be the outcome of this rule implemented by VVS Institutions on their students and staff.

Dear Hindus
It is our duty to uphold our own culture in Hindustan (India) before we are fully defeated by the so called progressive thinkers, leftists, wisemen, political gomukha vyagras and what not. We are mad after modernisation, westernisation, globalisation ets. forgetting who we are. what happens if we not follow our own culture. once again we will be in the strong clutches of Indian British,
we have to follow the culture at least wearing bindi or kumkum and bangles for girls and wearing good satvik clothes instead of provoking dress both girls and boys. Or otherwise we will face a great mental stress and strain problems to lead our family life in future. The Indians in foreign contries try to follow Our own culture. Try to understand the scientific and spiritual benefits behind every aachara of our our Sanatan Hindu Dharma.

Rajdeep

I am impressed by your post, well said brother. I think you are a good human being. Carry on the good work, you truly seem to have God's blessings in you.

“I love all religions. … If people become better Hindus, better Muslims, better Buddhists by our acts of love, then there is something else growing there.” Or in another place, “All is God — Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, etc., all have access to the same God.”~ Blessed Mother Teresa

"You are giving a western definition of secularism, which implies no religion"
No, I am not defining secularism. I am just pointing out to the fact that within a particular faith/religion, the extant of practice varies widely. Who gets to decide what practices are compliant to a particular religion? Who would be the certifying authority?
Just take the example of Catholicism in the US? The Catholic church (the Vatican authorities) has been unequivocally against all non-natural forms of birth control. However, surveys after surveys have found that an overwhelming majority of Catholics either practice non-natural forms of birth control or at least do not see it as being against their religion. A well known example is Melinda Gates (Wife of Bill Gates and a practicing Catholic) who through the Gates foundation is promoting non-natural birth control use in African countries.
I think true respect for another human being is respecting the choices they make in their lives even if we do not agree with them as long as they do not affect us. My Hindu faith does not diminish in anyway if I am not surrounded by women who wear bindis and bangles. Same holds for Muslims and Christians as well.
And finally, respecting people's choices is not just a 'western secular value', it is a HUMAN value.

This Vivekananda institute is run and managed by RSS.

Rajdeep (USA),

You are giving a western definition of secularism, which implies no religion.

The eastern version implies all religions.

Between the two I prefer the latter as it implies respect for everyone.

Mangalorean.com needs to have a separate section on its site for this kind of news. Mangalore is indeed turning to be a fools paradise.

"There are many institutions run by Muslim managements in the district where burqa is uniform. They allow students of other religions to wear the dress of their choice"
This is hilarious! What gives them the right to impose those rules on people of their religion (in this case, Muslims)?
The constitution of India does not mandate a person to follow his or her "religion". It is completely up to the individual to determine to what extent they want to follow their religion. Imposing rules on people of the same religion is as much a violation of the constitution as imposing on those of the other religion!!!

Oh my God, Pooja you are also in this blog site, seems like u got lot of free time to post some crap?? I bet there will be lot of fancy stores set up at where all institutions run by this outfit. Whats the next rule VVS gonna impose, could be that male students are not suppose to wear Calvin Klein or Tommy Hillfiger Underwears -ONLY Kachas (Gali Pata Style) the best brand would be PK Dooja Poojary and co. Kacha! Lungi! Jeans not allowed!

And for male counterparts - do they have to wear komana and lungi.

"Racial profiling at its best. That too, in the institution which is named after Vivekananda..!!" - Anil D.G., Mangalore, India

Although it is named after Vivekananda, it is popularly known as "VIVAAHAANANDA" College, Puttur, run by the Management consisting of mostly Sangha Parivaara having intolerant fundamentalist ideologies set deep in their mind, which is similar to the Talibaani mindset.
They don't hesitant to exhibit it openly.
Each of them think: "Either my way or no way"

This "VIVAAHAANANDA" College is the nick-name or popular name for it even during my 12th std. studies at TDB Junior College, Puttur in 1974-75.

Is it another diversionary tactics by Parivaara [after the protest procession by the Jagarana Hindu Mahila Vedike's "Paid activists" to divert the attention from Parivaara's "BHASMAASURA type" bungling in Home-Stay attack by HJV goons PLUS the BJP leaders' involvement in Prostitution racket in M'lore ?

Dear readers,

The management of VVS is answering Deputy C.M.Eshwarappa call for educational institution saffronization.

The Mgt.may be thinking sporting bindi may increase girl students memory and increase overall academic performance of the institution.

The lecture may need to shout more due to rattling noise of the bangles. The P.T.lecture may be happy to listen to the drill sound within the classroom. One advantage is they can even fight of culture police with this bangles.

Interestingly Management is not said anything about how much girl student wear. What comes for the boys students may be superman dress lets wait and watch.

It is interesting how certain institutions can ban bindis and bangles. However, when an institution makes it mandatory, everyone runs around with 'hotte uri'.

Please note that Private Institutions have the rights to have their own rules. It is too bad if you don't like them. It could be banning bindis or making it mandatory.
VN Baliga, India Aug 8, 2012
I concur with Prof. Narendra Nayak, these RSS thugs are hell bent to saffronize educational institutes. We are slipping into Hindutva Taliban and it is the time to get rid of these maniacs from the society.
Lawrence, USA Aug 8, 2012
What kind of bangles? Gold, sliver, glass or plastic? How many? If it is single, they can wear on ear, nose or on hands. Are they going to set up a bangle shop on the campus where girls can rent-a-bangle or rent-a-bindi?

One can imagine what kind of education our children will get from this kind of colleges. Is the Principal wearing the bangles already? Fight against the bigotry.

KARIYA, India Aug 8, 2012
The same Management ban Scarf in Ram kunja..! Now they Imposing new rules to Hindu staff and students. Ridiculous..
Mr. Kenneth D'Souza, India. first visit the college which run by your community and then blame others...
Girish, Australia Aug 8, 2012
Excellent idea. Now we know one institution people should not send their children to. Sometimes it is difficult when there is too much choice.
I am going to open a school which incorporates all religious orders. So children would need to wear bangles, wear a burkha, a frock and a turban. I think they would look like ninjas.

Day is not far when all the student of different religions will get enrolled to their respective religious institutions. Hotels will display the religion of the cook and the blood packets will display the religion of the donor. When the world moves ahead, Mangalore is going back in dark ages!

Few people do not know what damage they have caused in the lines of religion. Mangalore's dream of emerging as education, employment and tourist hub now stands shattered.

People of Mangalore are deeply polarized by religion than ever. RSS has left no stone unturned to fulfill their political aspirations. It all began with few self appointed organisations hatred towards Muslims, then Christians and then a war on cultural divide. Everything that could be done in 5 years time span.

The way some people comment here also show how education has not helped some to live in harmony. Some brains are spread as far as USA (advacanced socities) where they advocate hatred on political and religious fronts.

Kenneth D'Souza, India Aug 8, 2012
Several colleges in Mangalore do not allow bindi or raksh bandhan. So what is wrong if some school makes it mandatory for women to wear bangles? Jamaat Islami Hind is communalizing the matter and villainizing Hindu institution.
