Mangalore: We Are the Descendants of Rani Abbakka - Prasanna Ravi Reacts on Homestay

Published Date: 08 Aug, 2012 (2:47 PM)

By Violet Pereira, Team Mangalorean

Mangalore: Jagratha Hindu Mahila Vedike (JHMV) staged a protest demanding to put an end to the drug and sex mafia in the city, in front of the DC office, here on August 8.

The procession started from Taluk office premises and culminated near DC office.  Addressing the protesters, District convener of  Jagarana Hindu Mahila Vedike Prasanna Ravi, said that we will not allow anyone to defame our culture. We are not the descendants of the queen of London, but we are  the descendants  of Rani Abbakka. Recalling the recent ' Home Stay' incident, she said, "In the name of birthday party, prostitution was going on there, and when people who were trying to stop it were arrested by the police.

Further she said, a senior police officer had sent his daughter to celebrate her birthday in that ' Home Stay', if this is the case what will happen to our culture. Let him send his daughter to study in European countries  and not  in Mangalore. The rich and the influential people have taken  control over the city. Some students who had gone to that ' Home Stay' party did not know where they were going, only to find later that it was a ' Home Stay' premises.. They were invited to attend the birthday party and the party dress was provided to them by the birthday girl.

Some colleges have protested the attack by supporting the students who were celebrating the birthday party.  The opposition party member's son tried to send a College girl in the city to Mumbai for prostitution, why the college did not protest?  Where were the students and the management at that time? she questioned.  She also said in recent TV interview one of the prominent lady said, "Saree is the sexiest dress". She further stated that, a person with bad intention will not see what dress a girl is wearing. In the name of tourism the sex mafia is thriving in the city, she blamed.

She also stated that in Madekeri, the police have identified 2500 home-stay places and ordered all the illegal home -stay businesses to close. We need to bring a change in Mangalore. Vivekananda Vidhyavardahaka Sangha,(VVS) Puttur which runs several institutions has implemented a new rule making it mandatory for its girl students, teachers and staff to wear bangles and spot bindi on the campus, which is a good sign of retaining culture, she said. She urged the authorities to investigate the present home -stay attack and take stern action against the culprits whoever they are and save the innocent girls who are the target for drug and sex mafia.

SDM law college student Akshatha speaking on the occasion said, "Birthday means, celebration of a family member or members birthday which comes once in a year". If any person celebrating birthday, he should celebrate it with his/her parents, instead going to home-stay with friends and celebrating is not called birthday celebration. Why it was not celebrated with the family members or parents, why the students want to celebrate their birthday with friends at a  home-stay? she questioned.

Recalling the Newton's law, every action has a equal and opposite reaction, she said, "This is our reaction, you are the reason for us to react"? she stated. If we will not oppose such parties , crime will not stop in the city, she opined.

District Convener, Vishwa Hindu Parishath, Durgavahini, Vijayshree, and Dharmika Parishath member Asha Prasad were on the dais.  Deputy Mayor Amitakala, former mayor Rajani Dugganna,  Shakila Kava, Surekha Srinivas and many vedike members were also present.

Prasanna Devi, Do you have daughter, do they dress up in a saree, do they enjoy with friends. Looking at these ladies, looks like they have come straight from the village and are narrow minded....
POOJA, India Aug 13, 2012
@SO CALLED SHILPA SHETTY.....hello if you think we are uneducated y educated people like you didnt talk about the 4 muslim guys trying to rape a gril in train....you just do whatever in usa we will not come to stop but in mangalore we are there to takecare & we know how to....If you think wearing jeans & skirts you look like educated then i am sorry.......
Shilpa shetty, UK Aug 13, 2012
The ladies in the photos dont look like proper Mangaloreans because we Mangaloreans are quite broad minded. Live and let others live. I guess the crowd is from outskirts of Mangalore who have now come and settled in Mangalore for a better life and now would like to force their village mentality here. Please go back to ur village if u r not happy with the city life but please dont try and convert a city into a village.

Original, you don't have to reply to every comments picking a sentence out of contrast, twisting with your logic. Sometimes, your comments are sophomoric; I loose interest in taking it any further.

“As far as single parenthood is concern, you can call it as a culture of peaceful living” says Lawrence, the self-proclaimed ‘descendant of Queen Victoria’ !!

Dear Lawrence,
Yes – Single moms are a reflection of peaceful living, not a reflection of teenage sex or irresponsible men.

I also liked your justification for high divorce rate. Who cares if they live ‘happily’ for only a few years before separating from each other, right? After all, queen Victoria’s culture can never be inferior to others...!!

Keep it up.
Lawrence, USA Aug 11, 2012
Dear Mukkawala,Saudi Arabia,

Miracle conception is not a miracle in the US, but consensual. It is all documented, well nurtured with proper counseling and medical treatment until childbirth. We all know how the women and child in miracle conception is treated in India.

As far as single parenthood is concern, you can call it as a culture of peaceful living. If you are not meant for each other, you have an easy way out and start a new life. Best thing is that there is no social stigma attached to it. Worst thing is the children missing one parent in home. (You can imagine the similar situation with Indian expatriate population in Saudi Arabia who leave their spouse in India)

Couples who live together, live happily because they truly love each other. No hypocrisy; no social stigma here!!!

"Your DNA may prove close relationship to Queen Victoria as you guys have initially claimed yourself as Aryans" - Lawrence, USA.

All of a sudden, you have turned everyone into Queen Victoria's family, uh? Smiles...Whatever makes you temporarily happy, dude!!
Lawrence, USA Aug 10, 2012
Lawrence - "It is a whole different thing to debate if you are truly descendent of Queen Victoria or something else!!" - Says Original Pai.

Your DNA may prove close relationship to Queen Victoria as you guys have initially claimed yourself as Aryans. Later, you changed the story that makes me to think that you may be something else.
Original R.Pai, USA Aug 10, 2012
Dear Bennet Vas,
I never questioned your right to express your views. I was only asking for a logical explanation on your comments. It is okay if you simply want to comment and not explain it. We all understand!
Take care.

@ Original, "Nice try. Let me ask you - Have you heard about a Muslim, Hindu or Jewish White Supremist ?"

If according to you white supremacist belong only to Christian faith, why do they hate and kill "Blacks" in America, who are mainly from the Christian faith?. Go get some education on the white supremacy movement before trying to fool people with your comments.

Regarding, your other comments, As I said before - Knowing your strong links to RSS and its objectives, I do not need to assume about your support to the "People who have right to protest" in these pictures a.k.a. (HJV and RSS activists)

Karnataka state Women's Commission chief Manjula submitted the report to home minister R Ashok on August 8, placing the entire blame and fault on the boys who hosted the party.
Comment > Every sane person knows fully well that her report does not make any sense and only the Police Report should hold in a court of law.
This report will be a rude shock for all the non BJP supporters who are trying to get a political mileage out it. They would not accept this report and call it as biased or politicised report.
Comment > In your own words "There is no religion or the politics in this issue. It should be treated as an American TV comedy drama
‘Sex and the City’ " So where is the question of BJP supporter ? It is obvious the report has the stamp of BJP mentality.

The Police should have checked the blood alcohol levels of every one involved in the party.
Comment > What for ? They were not caught drinking and driving. It was a private party and they did not cause any nuisance to the public. On the contrary the video footage shows the Thugs were fully intoxicated - see their slurred speech ; also notice the fellow who was being repeatedly pushed into the cop van. Further the police are on record that they found only beer bottles there as also confirmed by the local corporator Padil who said "Hot Drinks" were found in the fridge - I thought only beer and wine were chilled before consumption.

The attackers in fact saved these girls from being raped. On the contrary they have been charged with rape and assault charges.
Comment > Had it not been for the camera men the attackers would raped the girls, despite being on Camera they have tried to molest the girls - groping and grabbing

It is well known fact that ‘Home stay’ is known for all the notorious activities. The owner used to give regular haftha to Police, Bajarangi’s and all the local goons to run his ILLEGAL business.
Comment > So you have finally concluded that the Police and Bajrangi incorporated are indeed hand in glove - that is the only fact. Is drinking and having sex (if at all between consenting adults) in home stay / resorts illegal ? What about if one checks into a Star or even ordinary hotel and does the same ??

There is no religion or the politics in this issue. It should be treated as an American TV comedy drama
‘Sex and the City’

Summary - You seem confused Krishna .. and are arguing like a street lawyer as can be seen from your views and reaction to comments from others.
N Mukkawala, Saudi Arabia Aug 10, 2012
Dear Larence USA, Indians dont need a culture of ‘miracle conception and miracle births’ which is happening in high schools nowadays . Look at American single parent culture before criticizing Indian culture.

(2) krishna, India - refer to any dictionery for the meaning of "creatures" - You have missed the essence of my post and choose to touch on irrelevent issues. (3) Original R.Pai, USA - What is your take on the Pictures ?? This is an open forum and as long as decency is maintained any one has a right to express their views - further, neither have I the time nor inclination to get into unwanted debates - Period ....
Stany D'Souza, USA Aug 10, 2012
This group does not know when to comment or protest on an incident. Their protest gives mixed signals for those 'chelas' of political parties. This is how our Mangaloreans, play to the tunes of Gunda Guru's in promulgating their vested interests. This group unfortunately tries to strengthen the 'Rowdism' in and around Mangalore, in the name of preserving the culture.
Original R.Pai, USA Aug 10, 2012
Dear Pramod,

See my responses below:

1. “your support to women who are protesting is understood, given your strong links to RSS”
I only supported their right to protest. I didn't support them on the issues. Please see the difference before you confuse yourself.

2. "A white supremist may or may not be a Christian"
Nice try. Let me ask you - Have you heard about a Muslim, Hindu or Jewish White Supremist ?

3. "...I am sure given your RSS background, you would have rejoiced within you, while shedding crocodile tears .."
An immature statement that doesn't really deserve any reaction.

4. "you can hide. But you cannot run"
Nobody is trying to hide or run here. You are imagining things to fool yourself. Please try again!

Did you have your education at St Aloysius? Do us a favor man. Please take a look at the map of India and see if Karnataka is divided into districts or states as you have mentioned.

“Pix of these women prove they are a frustrated lot, get a hammering from their husbands who come home drunk” – Bennet Vas, India

Dear Bennet Vas,
How exactly the pix of these women prove that they are a frustrated lot and get a ‘hammering’ from their husband ?
Original R.Pai, USA Aug 9, 2012
“Certainly you are not descendants of Queen Victoria. Queen has good culture and class” says self-hater Lawrence from USA after listing a number of unrelated items in his post!!

Dear Lawrence,

It is quite painful to see you embarrass yourself in public by bringing up totally unrelated items. If you haven’t noticed, these women are NOT protesting to legalize all the items you mentioned in your list. They are specifically talking about a certain social trends that they disagree with. For some weird and unknown reason, you seem to take pride in listing Dowri to Sati before identifying yourself as a ‘decedent of Queen Victoria’!!! (It is a whole different thing to debate if you are truly descendent of Queen Victoria or something else!! A quick look at Goan history can teach you a lot if you are still interested in educating yourself).

Also, I am wondering why you stopped short of listing things such as high divorce rate, pre-marital sex, children out of wedlock and other great achievements of Queen Victoria? The male dominated culture you talk about is not something specific to India. Did you read anything about the women’s rights in your great Victoria’s land? Do you know when they got the voting rights?

Oh well...

Another bunch of half baked creatures who do not know their front from their backs – Bennet Vas, India

What a wonderful vocabulary you have used.
You seem to be highly educated.
You seem to have acquired quite a few Alphabets from the prestigious Universities.
You seem to be fluent in a foreign Language called English.

You presume that by possessing these characters you can be called as Educated and well cultured. If you think in this manner, perhaps you do not know the meaning and value of Education. The Alphabets what you acquired in the University has made you literate to earn your bread. The language what you speak or proficient is like any other language. But Education is something different which is independent of a University degree and the language.
The women in the parade may not possess any degrees. The primary purpose of education is to build character and to enable people to lead moral lives. A person could be educated without acquiring a university degree
They may not communicate in English. Please mind your language. By calling them creatures you have proved yourself as an uneducated person.

By the way, Mr. Page the accused person in Wisconsin shootings belonged to a White supremacy group. Nowhere it was mentioned that be belonged to a ultra conservative Christian group. A white supremist may or may not be a Christian.

I am sure, if Mr. Page had succeeded in trying to get rid of people of another faith, which he had intended to do; I am sure given your RSS background, you would have rejoiced within you, while shedding crocodile tears on this portal like you did with the morning mist attacks.

Another bunch of half baked creatures who do not know their front from their backs - why is it only in Mangalore that we have these uneducated people taking to the streets and shouting hoarse about culture and morality ? why not other states in Karnataka ? There is a missing link .. and that missing link is the hidden BJP agenda of saffronizing Mangalore as undoubtedely majority of the Mangaloreans are CULTURED and educated, be it Muslim, Hindu or Christian. When people are educated, it is a threat to the scheming self centered Politicians. These rantings will not take us back to the stone age that is for sure, but people all over the world are laughing at us. Ladies, you follow your culture and let others follow their own culture. There are descendant of Rani Abbakka, Queen Victoria and mix of both Abbakka and Victoria live in Mangalore. You cannot dictate a single culture for them to follow.

You might have watched the movie "Water". It is pathetic to know how your male dominated culture forces widows to shave their head bald, and throw them out of home in order to get a new one.

Your culture forces women to bring dowry or face "Wife burning".

Your culture requires widow to go through self-immolation on her husband's funeral pyre.(Sati)

Your culture requires women to walk naked in front of public to please God(?). (Beththale Seve)

Your culture dictate the women from certain caste to be prostitutes (Devadasis)

Your culture encourages incest by marrying off the girl to relatives (Thammale Maghal)

Your culture requires you to keep quite like a dumb Lamb with the title of "Dharma Pathni" while your own man cheating on you.

Certainly you are not descendants of Queen Victoria. Queen has good culture and class. She would have a common sense to condemn the rape/molestation of innocent girls at Homestay, you don't.

May be I am wrong. Most of you look like Queen Victoria in Saree. Are you just Abbakka outside and Victoria inside?. Or perhaps, just pleasing your other halves? You must keep a eye on your own man and celebrate his birthday at home with relatives. Don't worry what others do.

ARISE... It is too late already.

“To me it seems like, it's more of a battle between , progressive Christians and jealous insecure BJP and Sangh parivar “ says ‘American’ Puttur Dinesh finally exposing his religious arrogance that he was trying to hide all these days!!

Dear Puttur Dinesh,
There is nothing like ‘progressive christian’. In fact, there is no progressive Hindu or Progressive Muslim either. There are only 'progressive people' – that’s it. Religion stops you from being progressive. That’s the reason why you see religious groups here in US absolutely hate progressive groups!! In fact, a Christian walked into a Gurudwara here a few days ago and shot and killed 6 innocent Sikhs. So much for the progressive mindset of religion!! However, it is possible that you are using the word ‘progressive’ in place of ‘aping western lifestyle’ !! If so, you are right!!

As far as these protests go, let them protest as they have the right to protest. However, they don’t have any right to dictate lifestyle to others. If they don’t like it, they can stay away from these activities. They can’t force others to stop partying in the name of birthday or any other event. People have the right to be stupid.
Ajay, USA Aug 9, 2012
I have no problem with these kinds of protests.
They believe in what they want to believe and will protest without interfering with anyone else's affairs.

This is better than violence at least. Come out and walk with placards, harmless to everyone else except themselves.

Madam Akshtha

Why did Sadanda Gowda and Yedurappa celebrated birthday in public?

We want own stay? Not Home Stay?(From the banners)
Law of Manusmriti for women

Let the (husband) employ his (wife) in the collection and expenditure of his wealth, in keeping (everything) clean, in (the fulfillment of) religious duties, in the preparation of his food, and in looking after the household utensils.

For better place for all of you is Home serving husband, childrens and elders not on streets.

"In the name of birthday party, prostitution was going on there

Real prostitution is going on and run by BJP members in Subhash Nagar, why din't you take procession to the apartment?

Recalling the Newton's law, every action has a equal and opposite reaction

Yes Madam you are right after the full cycle at Nursing home.

2500 home-stay places and ordered all the illegal home -stay businesses to close.

Why did local corporator a Ayappa devotee took Rs 6000 donation from illegal business?

a person with bad intention will not see what dress a girl is wearing.

Then why schools and colleges imposing headscarf ban?A Saree exposes belly but women covers modestly is objectionable?

We Are the Descendants of Rani Abbakka?

Similar to Darvin's theory of evolution.

Madam if Saree is a Indian culture, earlier days Men sport tail on head, wear "BalKache" and "Lungi".Can you ask your husbands to follow the same at this modern age?

Essell India, Is the lord busy?, why has he not come yet?.
This is just a knee jerk reaction by the otherwise timid generation, who got a small boost by the economic changes and helped push corruption to the forefront. Rather than pointing fingers at events and functions, they should support strict punishment for those goons or anyone that violates another human in any form or shape. This is a fundamental need for a strong society. Strict policing and clear cut policies will prevent students and youngsters from doing what anyone would wish to do at that age. It is a coming of age issue and a social one that has to be addressed in a mature and civil way.
Bottom line, violence should be banned. It is nothing to do with god/lord or religion. The fundamental definition of violence should be explained to every individual as I see in a lot of conversation where mature people suggest breaking or beating these youngsters. Anger management should be mandatory for these folks.

This is funny Stuff...

These women are whining about home stay??? Women should be safe when they walk the street of our city. Not the other way round that... they hide in veils... not to get anyone's attention or a gang will come strip you naked.
Women were molested by uneducated tugs who claim to be the moral police in a private event. I see it as a violation of basic right.
According to this... Why we need cops or courts.. lets just all take law in our own hands...
I must get a registered gun now so that i can shoot anyone who trespasses on my side of the wall. Didn't expect Mangalore to become a talibanised city. a very SAD state if affairs.

This is the direct question to Prasanna Ravi, who is claiming that the assailants were protecting the culture in Homestay. What the BJP workers doing in Subhash Nagar, why they were caught and some TV Channels telecasting and claiming that the arrested were the BJP party workers. Why there is no word about arresting the BJP members in sex racket.

Madam first clean your house then peep in to others window. You strongly support your brother organization HJV because you are the convenor of JHMV, both are same only the alphabets have been shuffled. HJV=Men JHMV =Women
Madam don't try to divert the Sex racket issue now. Be fair and teach your party members to be decent then preach others.

Update: 10 am, August 7

Mangalore, Aug 6: It has now come to light that those arrested in the alleged prostitution racket were members of BJP, and two of them local leaders of the party.

Two of the men have been identified as Sandeep Shetty from Uppinangady and Dooraiah (40), and one of the women is Heena Dildar (40).

All are said to be members of BJP, and another woman among them is reportedly a local BJP leader. Sandeep Shetty too is a local leader of the party in Beltangady.

How much money was given to each one of you. By the way, where were you all these days. It is an old news. All those Spas, Pubs, Home Stay, Resorts, Bars, Country Clubs were and are everywhere in the world (even in Muslim countries).

It is upto the choice of the people whether to go there or not. No one is forcing anyone. In case any one forces, one can complain to the Parents, Police and other administrative bodies.

Your agitation is not going to make any change. If you have idle time, visit some villages and help the illiterate to become literate and involve yourself in social welfare activities.
Girish, Australia Aug 8, 2012
Why are these protesters of our moral values out on the streets showing their faces? Aren't they supposed to cover their faces like women do in the north. Are they not supposed to be inside the kitchen cooking food for their husbands and their brothers who went around beating girls after getting drunk like good people?
I applaud their great courage and their even bigger double standards. We must let these people tell us what our culture is not get influenced by western culture.
What culture does the west have where their children have to start working at 15 and have to pay their own fees when they go to university. Our culture is better where we can make sure the women stay inside the house all day.
We should never let our women outside. What will happen if they start to work and earn and don't need to depend on us anymore. What will happen if they also enjoy a drink like us and come home and behave badly. Unthinkable.
I am glad right wing parties exist in Mangalore and their small groups are there to tell us what is right. Our parents did not teach us anything. We have to learn it from these people.

Recalling the Newton's law, every action has a equal and opposite reaction, she said, "This is our reaction, you are the reason for us to react"? she stated. If we will not oppose such parties , crime will not stop in the city, she opined..- News..

Akshatha....what about rape cases? What about murders for dowry? What about prostitution?

To me it seems like, it's more of a battle between , progressive Christians and jealous insecure BJP and Sangh parivar.

TIme and again, role of Christian institutions is being mentioned. Christians better be prepared to take these people to court and have some kind of self defense.

These groups are branches of the same tree, Sangh parivar. They change their names every year to escape the law.

How many of these same women have sent their children to the US and London for higher studies, why can u keep ur children in M.lore for studies. I am not encouraging drugs, I am against it...but see that u keep ur children in mlore and do not send them to London/USA for higher studies/for jobs.

Very very amusing.Day by day the true colors and true organizers of the home stay attack are emerging. Bangles and Bindi's mandatory in a college?. Next langa's only maybe.
First do you know how the economy of the country runs.Do you and your leaders pay Income tax?. Don't your menfolk drink, gamble and womanise all the time?.
Anil D.G., Mangalore, India Aug 8, 2012
One more BJP circus.. Akshatha has said that 'parties' should be celebrated with family members. Where are the family members in her 'party?'.. I cannot see anyone of them..!!!

Dear ill-informed protestors do not let yourselves to be misled by opportunistic political groups. If possible open your children or grandchildren’s textbooks to know about fundamental rights and duties of each citizen of India.

The fundamental rights guarantee six freedoms, which are available only to citizens of India.]These include the freedom of speech and expression, freedom of assembly, freedom of association without arms, freedom of movement throughout the territory of India, freedom to reside and settle in any part of the country of India and the freedom to practice any profession. When the constitution of the land has given this freedom to a citizen they don’t have to buy their freedom from any groups.

The fundamental rights obligate all Indians to promote the spirit of common brotherhood and abjure violence. Now dear protectors of culture of the land kindly abide by the laws laid down by constitution and do not encroach your fellow citizens freedom.

The convener and some other women in the pictures should first learn how to wear saris without exposing certain areas of the body in the middle, so that our sacred Indian culture can be protected.
Jude, UAE Aug 8, 2012
Dear misled and brainwashed sisters, please go ahead and dress the way you want, eat what you want, celebrate where you want, because you have all the freedom. Similarly please don't tell us what we should eat, how we should dress, what we should drink and where we should party, as we too have the same freedoms as you. You take care of your culture and we will take care of ours. whether we party in a hotel, pub or home stay is our business and not yours. We will decide on how we should celebrate our birthdays so stop your nonsense lectures on how people should celebrate their birthdays. You take care of your sisters and we will take care of ours, because the next time you attack any of us you will get a fitting reply.
Lancelot Tauro, Qatar Aug 8, 2012
