Jaipur: Bhatkal Man Arriving from Muscat with 2.75 Kg Gold Arrested

Jaipur: Syed Altaf, hailing from Bhatkal in Uttar Kannada district of Karnataka, was arrested at the international airport located in the southern suburb of Sanganer on Thursday morning.

He had arrived by the Oman Air flight from Muscat, Sultanate of Oman, around 6-30 am and was found carrying 2.75 kg of gold. The operation was jointly conducted by the revenue intelligence directorate and the department of customs.

Airport sources told this correspondent that it is the single largest seizure of its kind in the last 15 years.

The arrested passenger is being interrogated to ascertain if it was his first-time offence or if he has committed similar offences earlier.

This man did not declare Gold.
This man tried to avoid paying custom duty.
Why did he prefer to come via Jaipur ?
May be some custom officer promised him to clear his baggage without paying any customs.

What I understand that one can import upto 5 KG gold by paying customs duty. Why Syed was arrested?
