Udupi: Inmates and supervisory staff were injured in a fist-fight that broke out among the jailbirds in the district jail locastd at Kajaraguttu of Anjaru village in Hiriadka on Monday, Aug 13 evening.

Sources said that one of the inmates, Mohammed Ansar of Banglegudde in Karkala, had gone to the next cell to bring a carrom board to play on. At that time, undertrials Santu, Guru, Raghu, Vishwa, Divakar Koppa, Rajendra Shetty, Surendra Poojary and Pradeep assaulted him. Azharuddin, Tauseeq, Rafiq and Tony to came to the aid of Ansar were also assaulted.

In what is thought to be a retaliatory attack, Mohammed Azharuddin, Mohammed Rafiq, Mohammed Rashid, Mohammed Ansar, Mohammed Tauseeq, Mohammed Sadiq, Satish Shetty, Tony James and Mohammed Siddiq are said to have caught hold of the supervisor Siddappa and grabbed the keys of another cell from his pocket.

Using the key to open the cell, they charged into it and assaulted Sukumar, Vivekananda Kini, Harish Poojary and Surendra Poojary with alkathene pipes, carrom board, metal vessels and dinner plates. Siddappa and superintendent M V Shridhar Prabhu who went to separate them also were attacked by them.

Prabhu has filed a complaint at the Hiriadka police station stating that it was a preplanned attack to murder some of the inmates. Mohammed Ansar too has filed a complaint about the attack on him.
