Udupi: For people in coastal Karnataka, Sri Krishna Janmashtami is not a mere festival of the birth of Lord Krishna, but a festival to share joy with lots of fun and entertainment. Janmashtami for locals is incomplete without Mosaru Kudike and Hulivesha. Mosaru Kudike, is a festival similar to 'Dahi Handi' celebrated in Maharashtra and other parts of North India.

Every street in the city will be geared up to make the festival more ritualistic and also entertaining. While a section of the Hindu community who follow Tuluva Panchanga here, celebrate it on September 8. It is celebrated as Naada Habba all over the city and the temple town is gearing up for the celebrations on Saturday.  There was brisk sale of flowers and fruits at Car Street on Friday.

The anomalous Krishna "jayanthi" (AND NOT JANMASHTAMI) by the Udupi Krishna Mutt and its followers would be celebrated on 8th; I.E. THE KRISHNA PAKSHA ASHTAMI OF BHADRAPADA MASA AND NOT OF SHRAVANA MASA, the birth month of Krishna, whereas all the Hindus throughout India have already celebrated it a month back. Krishna was born in Shraavana maasa and not Bhadrapada maasa. Tomorrow’s function is not named as "Janmashtami", but as "Krishna Jayanthi".

This anomaly has crept in due to wrong interpretation of Hindu calendar by the Udupi mutts. The Original Aryans follow the lunar calendar, so do the Muslims. But, the Hindus synchronize their lunar year with the solar calendar by introducing the "Adhika Masa", every two and a half years, roughly. The Muslims do not synchronize and their calendar perpetually gets advanced and the seasons do not tally or synchronize with any month.

The synchronization by the Aryans was practiced even during the Mahabharata period as is evident by the argument advanced by Bheeshmaachaaryaa to decide the dispute raised by Duryodhanaa claiming that the one year "AJNAATHA VAASA" period was not yet over when the Pandavaas were traced during the "Uttara Go Grahana" at Viraataa Raajaa's kingdom. So, Sree Krishnaa too must have observed his birthday as per solar synchronous lunar calendar, as we do. The very name “Ashtami” proves the practicing of lunar calendar and rejects solar calendar for celebrating the day.

But, the Dravidian's follow pure Solar Calendar and as a consequence the Dravida Brahmins insist for the conjunction of Rohini Nakshatra with the rising moon on the Ashtami day. This is the reason why they celebrate “JAYANTHI” AND NOT “ASHTAMI”.

All the birthdays like the Raama Navami, the Hanumantha Jayanthi, the Shiva Raatre, etc are celebrated by all the Hindus, including the Ashta Mutts, on the "tithis" and not as per "Nakshatra". Just because the Madhvas claim special religious relation with Krishna, they have Dravidised only KRISHNA'S Ashtami by renaming it as Krishna Jayanthi and they too follow pure lunar calendar in respect of the jayanthi of all other gods and goddesses on the thithies, unmindful of the respective Nakshatra which prevailed when the concerned gods were born! Nakshatra rule is made applicable exclusively to Krishna!
