MANGALORE/UDUPI, May 25, 2008: Congress regained some of the constituencies it had lost in the 2004 elections by winning back Bantwal and Belthangady and retaining Moodbidri and Mangalore(formerly Ullal). Its candidates Vasantha Bangera (defected from JDS) won over his brother K. Prabhakar Bangera with a margin of 16,103. He polled 59,528, while his rival polled 43,425 votes. Another major gain was Bantwal where Ramanatha Rai won with a slender margin of 1251 votes. His rival a cousin at it B.Nagaraja Shetty of BJP a Sangh Parivar Hardliner lost. He polled 60,309 while the victor polled 61,560 votes.

In Moodbidri the expected has happened K. Abhayachandra of Congress own over his nearest BJP rival K.P.Jagadish Adhikari. Mr. Abhayachandra polled 44,744 votes while Mr. Adhikari polled 34,841 votes a difference of 9903 votes.

At Mangalore (formerly Ullal) U.T.Khader won for the second time over his nearest BJP rival Padmanabha Kotttari who had earlier won from Vittla in 2004 against the K.M. Ibrahim but now he has been defeated by U.T. Khader. Mr. Khader polled 50,718 votes while Mr.Kottari of BJP polled 43,669 votes a difference of 7049 votes. Mr. Khader had won in Ullal in the by-elections in 2007 after his father former MLA of Ullal U.T. Fareed had died mid term.

In Puttur Mallika Prasad who replaced Shakuntala Shetty as the BJP candidate has won with a slender margin of 1425 votes against her nearest Congress rival Bondala Jagannath Shetty. She polled 46,605 votes while Mr. Shetty polled 45180 votes.

Sullia(SC reserved constituency) has again fallen in the hands of BJP. Its candidate S.Angara won with a moderate margin of 4322 votes against his Congress rival Dr. B.Raghu. Mr. Angara polled 61144 votes against 56822 votes of Dr. Raghu. This is the fourth time Mr. Angara is winning which might get him into the ministry.

In Mangalore City North J.Krishna Palemar of BJP has posted a resounding victory with a margin of 14,426 votes over his Congress rival B.A. Mohiuddin Bava. Mr. Palemar polled 70,057 votes while Mr.Bava polled 55631 votes. For Mr. Palemar this is the second win.

In Mangalore City North BJP leader N.Yogish Bhat has won with a moderate lead of 8760 votes over his Congress rival Ivan D'Souza, It is surprising that Mr. Bhat won with the same margin over the Congress in the last election with more or less the same margin. This Margin has been oscillating for last four times. Mr. Bhat polled 60133 votes while Mr. D'Souza polled 51373 votes. Mr. Bhat also might get an important placing in the government.

Our team member form Udupi adds:

BJP has won four out of five constituencies in Udupi district. It has posted wins in Byndoor, Kundapura, Udupi and Kaup. The Karkala seat has gone to Congress.

At Byndoor constituency which was once a Congress bastion Mr.K.Lakshminarayana of BJP formerly the Chairman of the KFDC Mangalore has posted a good win over Mr. Gopala Poojary of Congress. In Kundapura in a walk over fight between Haladi Srinivas Shetty of BJP won with a huge margin of 25083 over his Congress rival three time MLA form Brahmavar K. Jayaprakash Hegde. In an all Bunt contest Mr. Srinivas Shetty polled 71695 votes while Mr.Hegde polled 46612 votes. This result was an off shoot of the delimitation.

At Udupi Mr. Raghupathy Bhat won with a small margin of 2479 votes over his Congress rival Pramod Madhwaraj. He polled 58,920 votes while Mr. Madhwaraj polled 56441 votes. Mr Madhwaraj is the son of the BJP MP Ms. Manorama Madhwaraj and had been given ticket in controversial condition. Mr.U.R. Sabhapathy was given the ticket first but Mr. Sabhapathy had surrendered it in favour of Mr.Madhwaraj.

At Kaup Lalji R.Mendon of BJP had a nail biting finish. He won by 967 votes against the Congress candidate V. Vasanth Salian who had won from this constituency for three times before and had been the fisheries minister too. Mr.Mendon polled 45961 votes while Mr. Salian polled 44994 votes.

The major upset for the BJP was in Karkala where its firebrand youth leader V.Sunil Kumar lost.  He polled 54,992 votes against H.Gopal Bhandari (former ZP member of the undivided Dakshina Kannada district) who polled 56529 votes.  Mr. Bhandary had inherited this seat from his political Guru M. Veerappa Moily and had won only once from Karkala.

Congress has fought this election with a defeatist mentality right from the word go. Sonia might have thought that state elections should be handled by the local Pradesh Congress and delegated this election to them, but the Karnataka Pradesh Congress did a poor job. For the Pradesh Congress to work well you need to have the right people heading it.
That the congress managed to get 80 seats inspite of such poor effort is a surprise.

Cheers !!! BJP Rules... Its just the beginning. What happened to Sonia Gandhi's speech, gone with the wind!!! Sonia Gandhi has to take moral responsiblity for this disastrous debacle of Ivan. The 2000 people who attended Modi,s speech must have spread the message to other 46,000 people who voted for BJP in Puttur. Proud to be BJP. Time to celebrate tonight, Cheers !!!
Ramanath Rai, congrats to you.
