Analysis: Yeddyurappa in dilemma

Published Date: 03 Jun, 2008 (9:23 PM)

By Team Mangalorean, Bangalore

Bangalore/Hubli, June 2, 2008: Even before the new government has proved its majority the Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa appears to be in dilemma over three main issues. The wrinkles of worry has started appearing on the foreheads of all senior functionaries of the party, well not all exactly -Ananthkumar apparently is sitting pretty in Delhi.

When the Mangalorean.com spotted Yeddyurappa at the Bangalore International Airport before leaving for New Delhi, there was so much hush hush business in the entourage of the new Chief Minister. Firstly, the circles close to him expressed worries of Mr. Yeddyurappa of inclusion of Reddys into the cabinet particularly when they are all from the same district-Bellary.  This district is known for the mining lobby which is stated to be financed the entire BJP campaign.

The BJP national leadership obviously does not approve of this move of Mr. Yeddyurappa as it considers the first BJP government of the South should be bereft of all strings attached, even if those strings had financed the electioneering.  This was perhaps why the national leaders including Advani, Narendra Modi, Rajnath Singh, Bhairon Singh Shekawath, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Maneka Gandhi and George Fernandes (is he still convenor of NDA?) did not pose with the new ministers when the oath was taken outside the portals of Vidhana Soudha.

According to sources in the inner circles of BJP the three MLAs from Bellary might grow up to be the largest impediment to the smooth functioning of the Yeddyurappa government. Taking into consideration the vested interests that these three MLAs, nay ministers have in Bellary, they might try to pull the government to their side by money power, muscle power and by arm twisting tactics. They might try to influence the Chief Minister and the government to look the other way when the national wealth of iron ore and Manganese ore being pillaged by illegal mining activities in Bellary and Sandhur respectively.  The talks are already on in the Congress circles to bring pressure on the Central government to nationalize the mining industry. If that happens the cash flow to the BJP government in Karnataka will dry up.

The Chief Minister of Karnataka, Shri B.S. Yeddyurappa calling on the Vice President, Mohammad Hamid Ansari, in New Delhi on June 02, 2008.

The second scenario that is emerging is that of the Hogennakal issue. The Tamil Nadu government has already begun to plan for construction of hydel power project as well as the water augmentation programme which will hurt the interests of Karnataka. The TN government intends to supply water to Hosur and Krishnagiri districts in Northern Tamil Nadu. Though Yeddyurappa in New Delhi on Monday said that, his Government will take a tough stand and safeguard the interests of Karnataka, nothing more could be said at this moment on the matter by both the governments since the matter is in the court.

The Third issue that might pull Yeddyurappa down was the issue of internal bickerings in the party. The three factions namely the one that owes allegiance to Yeddyurappa, another to Ananthkumar and other is that of traders and merchants that is always trying to safeguard their own interests but are staunch followers of BJP.

The Political pundits who are watching the advance of the new yet to be formed government say that It could take a Herculean effort on the part of Mr. Yeddyurappa to overcome these hurdles and emerge as the undisputed Chief Minister of the state.

As if it was not enough for him, the Jagadish Shettar issue is showing all signs of snowballing into a big controversy for Yeddyurappa. Nobody known till now why Mr. Shettar was left out of ministry. BJP watchers say he was kept in waiting to feel the pulse of the Veerashaivas of Northern Karnataka who might want some more representation in the party or in the ministry at a later time.

This is rewriting of my posting on 26 May 2008 in this forum.

Truly speaking, the Electorate did not favor any leading political party. However, they lead the BJP near to a simple majority and as a result BJP is come up with a largest party in Karnataka Assembly. 2004 they attained more seats than Congress and JDS, but due to the power mongering they could not form the government.

This time with support of independents, they have to form the government, and Governor must request them to form government. There should not be any hurdles or obstacles. The second largest party congress should sit in the opposition and exercise their effective roll on ruling party. Of course electorate favored BJP and needed a change of governance in State and this is the right time for BJP to act in accordance with the constitution. They should refrain from communal politics and prove themselves that they are also secular force of this country. The central leaders advise the outspoken leaders like Venkayya Naidu, Narendra Modi or Sushma Swaraj to shut their mouth and keep a distance from Karnataka Politics.

There is lots of difference within BJP that is known truth. This may explode during or when the distribution ministerial posts. BJP must understand that governing a state not that much easy as they think, as such it is similar to walking on an edge of sword. Karnataka is first state BJP is entering into a power, the entire credit goes to Yediyurappa for his hard work. The time ripe for Yeddi to give a pro-people governance rather typical Gujarat model. I wish him best of luck.

The minining lobby of Bellary was mainly responsible for the victory of BJP in Karnataka. It is really a sorry state of affairs. Our Central Govt should nationalise the minining industry and stop these mafia goons controlling the politics of the state. Our new CM should not oblige the mafia people. BJP will lose the trust of the people. Yeddy should remember that BJP got only 34% of the total popular vote, that is 1% less than Congress. People will not forgive them if they commit blunders! We hope for the best.

It looks like whichever party comes to power, their first priority is to become a minister to serve the public. These politicians already forgotten that they have been elected by the people and their job is to serve the people whether he is a minister or not. But our politicians assumption perhaps is, unless they become the ministers they cannot serve the public truthfully. For me, if anyone has the will to serve, they can do it wherever they are. I am not surprised even the 6 independants who are supporting the Goverment also demand the high posts to continue support. In the end, it is the state & the people suffer and to whom we can blame for this delimma. Voters? Politicians? or to those who think that they can rule everybody by offering bribes?

This Reddys & Co spoil the name of BJP in future. Off course they won 8 seats in district. I think they need to speak proper Kannada first.

Yogish Bhat of BJP has won from Mangalore for the 4th time. The GSB Community which was silent all these years has come out this time at the step motherly treatment to the community with ardent supporters as Yadiyurappa has neglected the member and not given any ministerial berth though though inexperienced new comers are accomodated in the ministry.

Yadiyurappa has a great task of balancing the members and his term will be wasted in holding the 116 members in a group than thinking of any development.

It is high time the Government nationalise the Mining Industry in its own interest because the Crores of rupees earnings of few minors is at the expense of the State Exchequer with quantity and price manipulations and cheating on payments of royalties.
