Mangalore Mar 19: The very first Kambala event in memory of the late J Jayagangadhara Shetty, going by the name of Jaya-Vijaya Jodukare Kambala was held on the Netravati river bank in Jeppinamogaru  on Saturday, March 19th 2011.

The Kambla races have always been a source of entertainment in Mangalore, where the strength and skills of one team is pitted against the other and the better man or in this case the better buffalo wins. The buffaloes are given a wash before the race so that their black hides gleam in the sun.  They are also decorated with fancy ropes and leaves. Before the race each buffalo is examined and its health and age determined according to its teeth. The junior category is identified as having 6 teeth and the senior category is identified as having 8 teeth.

Bhrama Shree Vedamurthy Vittaldas Tantri, Derebail, inaugurated the Kambla by lighting the traditional lamp. In his inaugural speech he said that Jayagangadhar was very popular for his social service and was particularly known for encouraging buffalo racers. He said that even though the best team would win in the race, winning and losing was part of the competition the losing team must not lose heart but accept it as a new beginning.

Parish Priest of Cascia, Fr. Vincent Menezes, addressing the gathering said that, today was a festive day and was celebrated as St. Joseph's day.  He hoped that the day would bring peace, harmony and unity among all Mangaloreans.
