Udupi: Long awaited new diocese of Udupi was announced today July 16th afternoon at 3.30 p.m. simultaneously at Kallianpur-Milagres Church, our Lady of Dolours Chapel of Bishops House of Mangalore Diocese, Nunciature New Delhi and Holy See Vatican (12 noon). This announcement was done today being the day of feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
Most Rev. Dr Jerald Isaac Lobo of Shimoga Diocese is appointed as the first of new diocese by Pope Benedict XVI. In Kallianpur – Milagros Most Rev. Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, the Bishop of Mangalore announced the new Diocese. Vicar General Msgr Denis Prabhu and Chancellor Fr Henry Sequeira announced the same in Mangalore.

The new Diocese of Udupi is comprised of 48 parishes belonging to Karkal, Shirva, Udupi, Kallianpur and Kundapur deaneries. According to the canonist and Chancellor Fr Henry Sequeira the new Bishop will have to take charge of the new Diocese within next two months. According to Most Rev. Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, the Bishop of Mangalore there is huge potential and leadership in diocese of Udupi towards the pastoral and social growth.
According to Vicar General Msgr Denis Prabhu, the Diocese of Mangalore has a history of more than 5 centuries. The faith of the people has grown ever since 1515. It has served in the initial years the faithful of the Dioceses of Calicut, Kannur, Gulbaga and six Syro Malabar- Malankara Dioceses before they were established. According to him if the Diocese of Udupi would have been established together with Karwar it would have far excelled by now than all other Dioceses of Karnataka. More over the faith was handed over to us from Goa through Gangolli, Kundapur etc parishes which belong to Udupi. According to Fr Pius D’Souza, the Episcopal Vicar for the religious of Mangalore
Diocese there is a scope for fresh and inspired beginning in the new Diocese. The Diocese is already set with strong faith. Being so the formation of faith is easy and more fruitful. According to Fr Peter Cyprian D’Souza a Capuchin priest there is lot of love, concern, life and spirit of unity in the parishes of Udupi. Being so it will have express growth.
According to Sr Cecilia Mendonca the president of Catholic Religious of India (CRI) this is a great gift to the Diocese of Mangalore on the occasion of its Post Centenary Silver Jubilee. According to Fr Herald D’Souza a diocesan priest together with the announcement of the Diocese of Udupi, the Mangalore Diocese should have been erected as an arch-Diocese comprising of all the Konkani Dioceses of Karnataka. Because the Konkani culture, lifestyle and pattern of functioning is quite unique and different from others.
According to Jerald D’Costa the secretary of the Mangalore Diocesan Parishad this is big news for the Christians of Mangalore as well as Udupi. The new Diocese means scope for new development, new openings and new leadership. | |

This is exciting news. The decision to form a separate Diocese has been pending for a long time as the diocese of Man galore was unwieldy and it was too much of a burden for The Bishop Of Mangalore to make his pastoral visits regularly apart from attending to confirmations and other works connected with his pastoral duties. Therefore the news from the Vatican has been joyously received by the people of Mangalore as well as the people of Udupi, Kundapur, Karkala and the surrounding regions. What is more that Rev. Dr. Gerald Lobo from the Diocese of Shimoga has been given the charge of the newly formed Diocese of Udupi. Bishop Gerald has a great track record and I share the view of people in general that the choice has fallen on the right person. Time will prove the virtues, capabilities and the decisions the new incumbent would make to make complete success of his tenure in Udupi.
I join scores of people in kudos to Rev. Dr. Gerald Lobo and wish him every success entrusted to his care. Indeed he has a success story behind him and he will certainly make a great success of the work entrusted to him.

Well, the only postive aspect of this is the leader, the new bishop is a great leader and a great human being.
Other then that I dont see any excitment only additional expenses which could have been spent for much needed purpose, if the present bishop could not handle 160 churches, he had appointed his reprsentatives who were doing their job well, and life was smooth, this power, politics has entered to religion too, and the british policy of Divide and Rule still exist in our society, the ultimate loss is the oridinary faithfull indivisual who will have to shell out some funds for all the fun fare, increase in prayers is the need of the hour, which is totally lacking, but other comforts are coming into existence, getting involved in unwanted projects, without proper accountablity has been the norm of our society today, and same goes with our present diocese, conducting of prayers mass etc, now has been a convience of some, and will be done at their will and wish, religion is getting commercialised |

Congratulations and Best Wishes to Bishop Jerald Isaac Lobo on his latest and delightful assignment as a Bishop of newly established Udipi Diocese. What a great occasion to witness Udipi as a new Diocese that will take care of 48 Parishes of Udipi, Karkala, Shirva, Kalianpur and Kundapur. An important jurisdiction with important parishes will brighten the newly created Diocese of Udipi to flourish in Christian faith and virtues. Our beloved Hindu and Moslem friends in this region will certainly welcome the new creation.
It is evident that Vatican is viewing India as an important part of the Catholic World where population is growing steadily and the Christians are gaining momentum in every sense of the national values of Secular India. The religious values of India are attracting world attention because India is predominantly a Pro-life nation and regardless of the economic and social constraints, India is moving forward with lot of courage and dignity by fostering religious harmony and stability.
Creating additional Dioceses and appointing new Bishops is the best means of shepharding the Catholics with increased devotion and attention so that Christianity may continue to flourish in Secular India where democracy will remain the hallmark of our national identity. More Bishops will have greater strength and dedication towards the people of all ages and backgrounds so that Catholicism will help stabilize our educational, religious, social and even political values to a greater level than ever before.
Our only desire and hope is to see Mangalore to be recognized as an Archdiocese, because Mangalore has all the ingredients to monitor the rest of the newly created Dioceses and we have the right shephard to be our worthy Archbishop of Mangalore. |

It is indeed a great news for us people of Udupi area. This day will be written in Golden letters by people of Udupi Diocese. Congratulations to Most. Rev. Dr. Jerald Lobo being appointed as first Bishop of Udupi Diocese.
As suggested there is a lot to be done to Udupi Diocese in terms of development and social services. Udupi being close to Kundapore, Gangolli, they will have a greater advantage to perform their religious requirements which they used to travel all the way to Mangalore. Wishing all the best for Udupi Diocese and people of Udupi. CONGRATS TO ALL PEOPLE OF UDUPI PARISHES WHO WERE EAGERLY WAITING FOR THIS GREAT DAY FOR A LONG TIME.. |
