Jaago Mangalore Association “Protest campaign will continue” Vijaynath Shetty
Police avert campaign road show and arrest six protestors on Day One.

Mangalore: The Inaugural Road Show initiating the Protest campaign against Padil Attack organized by Jaago Mangalore Association in cooperation with various voluntary bodies was averted by the police ending with the arrest of six protestors including Vijaynath Shetty, Chief Co-ordinator, Jaago Mangalore Association.

A group of protestors led by Shetty had assembled outside DC Office this evening at 5:30 p.m. to commence on the maiden road show to build the campaign leading to the final Protest March and Protest Meet on 21st August. A police team led by an Inspector from Pandeshwar Police Station intervened and told the waiting protestors to cancel the protest as the required advance intimation was not given to the police.

When the protesters refused oblige them, the police arrested six protestors and took them to Pandeshwar Police Station. Those arrested were:

Vijaynath Shetty, Chief Co-ordinator, Jaago Mangalore Association
Dinesh Hegde Ulepady, Eminent Advocate and Activist
George, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike
Rajesh Kundar, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike
Vijay Kumar (Padil Attack victim)
Gurudath Kamath (Padil Attack victim)

Later at 7:30 p.m., they were issued a notice and released.

Jaago Mangalore Association hereby clarifies that it had given due intimation in a letter addressed to the police commissioner and an acknowledged copy of the same is attached with this press note.

“We have so far not received any written communication either from the police or from any other authority denying us permission to stage the protest. Hence our protest campaign will continue unhindered and as planned. We shall hold the road shows at different junctions in the city as planned every evening till 21 August 2012. I once again appeal to all the citizens to participate in the Protest March on 21 August which will commence at Jyothi Circle at 4 p.m. and conclude with protest meet at Nehru Maidan at 5 p.m,” said Vijaynath Shetty.

He further added, “Atrocities like Padil Attack can happen only because good people keep quiet. The silence of the majority of peace loving citizens has encouraged the anti social elements and the vested interests who are backing them to hold the city to ransom. If we are to defeat such forces, we should refuse to be bogged down and put up a united stand.”

Mangalore: Jaago Mangalore, in association with ‘Arise Mangalore’ and various voluntary bodies, is organizing a mass campaign against the attack on college students at a homestay in Padil on July 28.

The campaign commenced on Thursday, August 16 but the police interviened and arrested the protesters. The reason given for the arrest was that no permission had been obtained for the protest in front of the DC office.

Vijayanath Shetty, chief co-ordinator of Jaago Mangalore Association, eminent advocate Dinesh Hegde Ulipady, JMA secretary George and victims of the homestay attack Vijayakumar and Gurudath Kamath were among those arrested.

The protesters gathered at 5.30 pm, at the DC Office to light the candles and to project the video clippings of messages by eminent people on LCD screens, but the police did not allow them to stand in front of the DC office. A police officer said to one of the protesters, advocate Dinesh Ulepady not to protest because they don't have prior permission to hold a campaign. But Dinesh Ulepady said that they have already submitted the letter to the police commissioner.

Speaking to Mangalorean.com Vijayanath Shetty said, "When I met the the police officers they said not to display the Video Clippings while protesting". We have submitted the letter to the police commissioner regarding the campaign and endorsement was given. The police commissioner was out on some official work and I was in contact with him since morning and he assured me that he will get back to me in the afternoon.  But he never kept his promise.

He said, "By having the endorsement in our hand, the police have arrested us for protesting.  I am not upset or against anyone, this is the victory against our fight for justice and a preparation for the protest march on 21 August.

Vijayakumar further said that we are proud that at least we are fighting for the right cause and we have been arrested for no reason.  We were standing in front of the DC office for our campaign for justice but the police did not allow us to do so. Actually we had thought of lighting the candles and many were about to join us, but unfortunately police didn't let us to go on with our plans and arrested us and took us to Pandeshwar Police station.

Savitha, a middle aged lady speaking to our correspondent said that, when eminent personalities fight against the atrocities happened in recent days and police arrest them, then how can a common man get justice ? she questioned.  She further said that first the police should arrest the culprits who are still hiding under the bushes and punish all of them severely and not the one who are fighting for justice. She also said that in our time there was very good respect for women and now the so called organizations are creating problems in the name of culture.  We must uproot such organizations from the society and make the city a better place to live.

Thank you all for following us on the issue. I met the Police Commissioner this morning and again sought his clearance for our planned Protest March and Protest Meet on 21st August 2012. However the Commissioner expressed his unwillingness to grant permission for the protest explaining that the issue was getting hot and the police force would be unable to handle any untoward law and order situation that might arise during the protest. Our movement was meant to be a civilized and peaceful protest with the main objective being to express strong disapproval against violence, especially violence against women. As Jaago Mangalore Association has no intension to break the law or create public nuisance in order to voice our protest, I regret to inform all concerned that as of now, the protest planned for 21st August stands cancelled. I thank all members of the public, and also most importantly, the media for following us on this issue and I am sure with your support we have made our point absolutely clear. Through this I once again urge everyone to shun violence and help create a Better Mangalore to Live. Jaago Mangalore Association will continue to work for the cause of Better Mangalore in the future.

I totally agree with Mr. Vijaynath Shetty's views.
Vijaynath Shetty, Mangalore, India Aug 17, 2012
First of all I really appreciate all your comments, whatever they may be. Everyone is entitled to their views, so here I would like to express my views.

First of all I have organized this protest only because I wanted to protest, irrespective of how many people join me. Today it is someone else, tomorrow it could be my daughter or my mother or any woman I know.
For your information, the protest was at 5.30 pm and the police picked us at 5.30 before the protest started. There were lot of people standing on the sides waiting to join the protest but they were scared to join because there were more than 75 cops. So contrary to what some of you say, this protest was successful.
I appreciate the police’s work when they arrested us because we didn’t have permission and the Pandeshwar police officers behaved like gentlemen with us.

Check this out! Today in all the papers, the chief minister has put big advertisement saying that ‘Karnataka is safe for North East people’. Why can’t he say the same thing to Mangalore people? I will be more than happy if he did that. I only want 'Mangalore to be a Better Place to Live'
This protest was called basically to say that 'Lets make Mangalore a Better Place to Live'. I am fully against people resorting to violence, especially against women, just because they don't agree with them when the law is there to address this. Now let me explain. We people have elected our government since ages, whether it is Congress or BJP or JDS or any other party. This government which has been elected by us has made certain laws for us to follow, like we are allowed to drink after 18 years, has given licence to open a pub, a bar or a home stay etc. The government has allowed us to wear clothes whatever is sold in the market because they approve the sale of such goods or the government has not made any rule regarding what is right clothes to wear like they have done in Saudi Arabia. Hence we are following whatever the government elected by us has approved. So why should we be blamed? If you say that there were drugs, then it is the failure of the government to curb this. Now these kids went to the pub which is approved by the government elected by us. They were hit there. They were having a party in a house. They were hit there. They booked a room in a home stay. They were hit there. Then where should they go and drink? And if drinking is wrong it is the responsibility of the parents to curb it. Nobody else. You have no right to hit somebody because you don't agree with what he or she is doing as per the law of the land which was made by the gov’t elected by you. If you don't agree to it then tell your government to change the law.

Why you need 50 cops to arrest 5 people..
Prakash Shetty, India Aug 16, 2012
The pictures clearly indicates the police were eager to arrest the people who were standing near the hotel. Why the police arrested the innocent people? Vijayanath Shetty please file a complaint against the police who treated you all like animals. We need to fight against the atrocities or else one day the goons will enter everyone's house and beat their mother, wife and sister's and police will arrest the innocent by freeing the culprits.

.Mangalore....great City for anyone to succeed in life. This is where peaceful ,respected people get arrested and rowdies go free. Very corrupt state.
Mr.Vijayakumar Shetty.,Mr.Dinesh Hegde and all who are taken to custody, think of Mahatma Gandhi who was a Peace lover got arrested by British. And now Corrupt officials are acting like British.
August 15 is Freedom day earned through Satyagraha and August 16 is Slavery day for peaceful Satyagrahis. Is City still under curfew?
When did Peaceful gathering became Illegal. If so how did they allow all kind of gatherings on August 15. around the city.

Little bit of info on the padil atttackers."A criminal case registered in the Bajpe police station some time back reveals that the Hindu Jagarana Vedike team which had resorted to the Morning Mist attack case, had even planned to demolish a Daivasthana once earlier.".The supari to demolish the Nellidadiguttu house which is under the SEZ shadows, was given to this Subhash gang itself through Sharath. The third accused in the Morning Mist attack .

"Believe it or not. Subhash Padil, the mastermind behind the Morning Mist homsetay attack that has created uproar all over the state, had a love marriage with a Kannur girl, despite some opposition from their families."

MANGALORE POLICE KNOW ONLY TO ARREST INNoCENT PEOPLE WHO PROTEST FOR GENUINE REASONS BUT CANNOT CATCH CULPRITS WHO MURDERS, RAPES AND LOOT AS THE HOME MINISTER HIMSELF IS CORRUPT. SO WHO WILL ORDER THEM TO CATCH CULPRITS ? SHAME ON MANGALORE POLICE AND SPECIALLY THE COMMISSIONER OF POLICE. INSTEAD OF ARRESTING THE CULPRITS WHO TOOK LAW IN THIER HANDS AT HOMESTAY IN PADIL ON 28TH JULY, THEY TOOK INNOCENT BOYS AND GIRLS INTO CUSTODY WHO WERE JUST CELEBRATING A BIRTHDAY PARTY. SUCH A PEACEFUL CITY IS TURNED TO A CRIME CITY ONCE BJP GOVERNMENT CAME. IN MY 55 YEARS OF AGE I AM HEARING ABOUT ALL THIS WHAT IS HAPPENING IN MANAGLORE AFTER BJP CAME TO POWER WHICH WE DID NOT HEAR IN 60 YEARS OF CONGRESS RULE.
