Pak army chief warns India of ‘unbearable cost’ in case of war

Islamabad,  (PTI): Pakistan’s powerful army chief General Raheel Sharif has warned India of “unbearable damage” if it tried to impose a short or long war on his country.

Pakistan named Raheel Sharif, a career infantry officer considered a moderate as army chief, on Wednesday as the country fights a Taliban insurgency and seeks accord with the United States on how to stabilise neighbouring Afghanistan. Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif announced that Raheel Sharif, brother of a war hero, would take charge of the world's sixth-largest army, with a formal handover from General Ashfaq Kayani on Friday. “Let me reiterate that our armed forces stand fully capable to defeat all sorts of external aggression.

“If the enemy ever resorts to any misadventure, regardless of its size and scale – short or long – it will have to pay an unbearable cost,” he said in his address at a special event organised by army at its Headquarters in Rawalpindi yesterday to mark the 50 anniversary of the 1965 war with India.

The remarks were a pointed response to a statement by Indian army chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag who said last week that Indian army was prepared for “swift, short nature of future wars”.

“Armed forces of Pakistan are fully capable of dealing with all types of internal and external threats, may it be conventional or sub-conventional; whether it is cold start or hot start. We are ready,” said General Raheel.

This time the reference was towards India’s cold start doctrine of war.
Terming Kashmir as “unfinished agenda of partition”, he said that it should be resolved according to UN resolution which calls for plebiscite to decide its future.

He also warned that Kashmir cannot be out in the back-burner. He promised to dismantle the entire networks of militants in the country.

“I reiterate the resolve that we shall not relent until all terrorists, their financiers, abettors, facilitators and sympathisers are brought to justice,” he said.

He also assured Afghanistan of support in creating peace and said that Pakistan made “concerted and sincere efforts for bringing peace in Afghanistan but certain inimical forces are bent upon undermining our efforts.”

  1. ok, tough guy! LOL We all saw how great your forces were when Doddanna managed to get OBL in the heart of your military garrison! LOL LOL

On a serious note, war is not in the best interests of India either. India is not US or Russia. We may be far better than our terrorist neighbor. However, the cost of a war would be humongous and it will take many years if not decades to recover from it. This is precisely why Bharatha should engage in unconventional ways to destabilize Pak as Israel does to its ‘friendly’ neighbors. In Pakistan, the entire power is in the hands of Punjab province. This has left other provinces very unhappy, especially the Baluch and North-west regions. Bhatatha needs to support these factions to counter threats from Pak.

I promise we are not interested in war. Please promise us that you are not using terrorist to decide future of Kashmir. Leave it to UN resolution.

    • vas- “I promise we are not interested in war. Please promise us that you are not using terrorist to decide future of Kashmir. Leave it to UN resolution.”

Sir, the UN has become the handmaid of the Big Boss of the unipolar world, i.e. the USA. The USA always gets resolutions passed by the security council in vaguely coined phrases to begin with, so that it could twist the resolutions later according to its wish and whim. UN has become farcical and irrlevent now. So, we can not leave the matter to the UN. The intervention by the US in Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Bay of Pigs, Vietnam, Korea, etc, are a few such dangerous instances.

However, the UN resolutions concerning Kashmir, including the 3rd resolution about plebiscite in Kashmir, is no more in force. For, in the Simla Agreement Mrs. Indira Gandhi had made Pakistan to remove the Kashmir Issue from the realm of the UN, before she released the 93000 Pak prisoners of war in 1972. All disputes, including about Kashmir, are agreed to be settled bilaterally and without the intervention of any third party or the UN.

Sir, please note the above facts. However, of late Mr. Modi’s government is going to the UN with petty matters between India and Pakistan. He is virtually undoing the Simla Agreement in letter and Spirit!!!

For instance, Modi’s government had called for action against Pakistan by the UN over 26/11 mastermind Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi’s release. India is resubmitting itself to the jurisdiction of the UN, giving a suicidal goodbye to the benefits got under the Simla Agreement.

RSS can only hoodwink the people and lac diplomacy in international conduct! Modi does not know that the foreign tours are not meant for speeches aimed at domestic elections from foreign shores. He can not differentiate between domestic electioneering and foreign diplomacy!!! The wrong person at the top!!!
