Pakistan witnesses 80 per cent decline in terror attacks

Islamabad, June 8 (IANS) Pakistani security forces on Tuesday claimed to have curtailed militant activities by around 80 per cent since the December 2014 deadly terror attack on an Army-run public school in Peshawar.

More than 7,000 hardcore terrorists have been arrested and over 2,400 militants killed in a countrywide swoop after the terror attack which prompted the government to launch the National Action Plan (NAP) to counter militancy, official statistics released here showed.

“It’s official now. Terrorist activities declined 80 per cent in the past 17 months in Pakistan,” revealed an official progress report prepared by the National Counter-Terrorism Authority (NACTA).

Law enforcement agencies arrested 4,388 key terrorists and 2,255 militants killed in various operations against armed militias across the country in the last one-and-half years, read the report obtained by Geo News.

The attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar on December 16, 2014, which claimed over 150 lives — mostly of school children, was claimed by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.
