People have high expectation from Rail Budget: Prabhu

New Delhi, Feb 25 (IANS) Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said on Thursday said that public expectations from the Railway Budget 2016 are quite high.

“People have high expectations from the Railway Budget this year,” Prabhu told reporters here while leaving for budget presentation in the parliament.

While railway finances are under major strain, the option to raise passenger and freight fares will not be easy for the minister, at a time when elections are coming up in four states and diesel prices are falling along with global crude oil rates.

New Delhi, Feb 25 (IANS) Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu began presenting his ministry’s budget for the next fiscal year in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, promising to address the issues concerning all stakeholders — citizens, employees and industry, among others.

“These are challenging times,” Prabhu said in the opening remarks of his second rail budget speech, adding that the strategy will involve three pillars — exploring new avenues to raise revenues, improve efficiency and totally recast decision-making.

“Cooperation, collaboration and communication, are the hallmarks of Indian Railways’ journey forward,” the minister said. “We will be at the forefront of infrastructure investment in the country.”
