Pranab greets Mauritius’ first woman president

New Delhi, June 8 (IANS) President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday congratulated Ameenah Gurib-Fakim on her election as the Mauritius president, saying he looked forward to working with her to further strengthen India-Mauritius ties.

In his message to Gurib-Fakim, Mukherjee said: “It gives me great pleasure to extend my sincere felicitations to you on your election as president of Mauritius.”

“India and Mauritius share unique and fraternal ties, based on shared history, culture and democratic values,” he said, adding he looked forward to working with her “to further strengthen these ties”.

“Please accept, Excellency, my best wishes for success in the discharge of your high responsibilities as well as your personal health and well-being,” he said.

Gurib-Fakim was on last Friday sworn-in as the island nation’s sixth president, becoming the first woman to hold the position.
