President greets Guyana on its Republic Day

New Delhi, Feb 22 (IANS) President Pranab Mukherjee here on Monday extended his greetings to the people of Guyana on their Republic Day.

“I extend warm greetings and felicitations to Your Excellency and to the people of Guyana on the occasion of your Republic Day,” Mukjherjee said in his message to the Brig. (Retd) David Arthur Granger, President of Guyana.

India and Guyana have traditionally enjoyed warm and friendly relations which have been strengthened in the last few decades through regular exchanges between our two governments.

“Your excellency’s recent meeting with our Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) in New York imparted fresh momentum to our partnership. We look forward to strengthening the bilateral cooperation between India and Guyana for the mutual benefit of both our peoples,” he added.

Guyana, a country in South America’s North Atlantic coast, celebrates its Republic Day on February 23.

President condoles Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan’s death

New Delhi, Feb 22 (IANS) President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday condoled the death of eminent musician Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan.

“I am sad to learn about the passing away of your father Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan,” Mukherjee said in a message to the deceased musician’s daughter Pammi Khan.

“He left an indelible mark in the world of classical music and was known for his deep resonant voice, ability to retain the purity of a Raag and innumerable compositions which he created over the decades under the pseudonym ‘RasanPiya’,” the President said.

“In his death, the nation has lost a doyen of Indian classical music.”

An eminent vocalist, Rashid Khan was India’s oldest performing musician. He was honoured with numerous awards, including Padma Bhushan, for his services to Indian classical music.
