Puttur: Highway Blockade and Protest over Yettinahole Project at Uppinangady on Sep 15

Puttur: The ‘Save Netravati’ committee, with the support of several other organizations, has decided to stage a highway blockade at Uppinangady on September 15 and court arrest in large numbers.

The agitation is in protest against implementation of the Yettinahole project which is likely to drain the district’s lifeline, river Netravati. Uppinangady is the place the river is joined by its tributary Kumaradhara, besides other streams in the region.

The committee convener, Dr Niranjan Rai, joined by the office-bearers of many organizations from Uppinangady and around, held discussions at a late-evening meeting on Sunday, Aug 23. They decided on the date of agitation and charted the future course of action.

The fact that not only those depending on water on river banks would be affected but also the depletion of water levels in wells over was stressed on.
