Puttur: The issue of man-elephant conflict often comes to the fore as wild jumbos keep making guest appearances in human areas and sometimes on arterial roads in the district.

The upgradation of the Shiradi highway has been hitting roadblocks for a major reason also. Labourers are expected to stay overnight during the progress of work. But wild animals keep moving about on the highway late in the night, which factor has scared the workforce and not many are coming forth to face risks.

A march of wild elephants near the Chaumundi shrine on the Shiradi ghat between Nov 2 and 3 raised an alarm for the residents and motorists. Traffic was blocked for over half an hour the mighty pachyderms crossed the road. Only after ensuring that everything was safe, traffic was resumed.

Bikers and drivers of smaller vehicles have been asked to be cautious and watchful during the nights while travelling on the road.
