Puttur: Man Convicted for Wife’s Death – Ruling on Punishment Reserved

Puttur: Bernard Monteiro of Kapinabagilu in Kaukrady village had been charged with the killing of his wife Rosalina Lobo in a fit of anger on July 6, 2013.

Around 9-30 that night, Monteiro had brought home some pork and wanted his wife to cook it immediately for him. She told him that she would do that after finishing the job she had on hand, of heating the water in the vessel in the bathroom.

Enraged by this, the man beat his wife with a sickle. When she snatched it from his hand and threw it out, he reportedly doused her with kerosene oil and tried to set her on fire.

With severe burn injuries, she lay in the hospital for some days and succumbed to the injuries on July 11.

The police arrested the accused on July 8 and filed a chargesheet against him. The district’s fifth additional sessions court based here has now pronounced his guilty of manslaughter not amounting to murder. The quantum of punishment is expected to be announced on Dec10.
