Puttur: Roseline Lobo Killing – Husband Handed out Three-year Jail Term

Puttur: Bernard Monteiro aka Fernard, a resident of Kapinamajalu in Kaukrady village near Uppinangady, had been accused of causing the death of his wife Rosalina Lobo by hitting her with a cutting implement her and then setting fire after dousing her with kerosene oil on July 6, 2013.

Roseline died of severe burn injuries a few days later. Monteiro had brought home some pork around 9-30 pm on that fateful day. She was busy boiling water in the bathroom and she told him that she would do it after the present job was over.

Angered by this, he had assaulted his wife. He has been in judicial custody since July 8, 2013. the Uppinangady police had submitted a charge-sheet to the district 5th additional sessions court based here.

Earlier in the month, the court had arrived at the conclusion that it was a case of manslaughter not amounting to murder. The judgement was delivered by sessions judge M Ramachandra on Wednesday. The convict has been sentence to a jail term of three years and 15 days. That would leave him only another seven months to stay in jail.

The defence had appealed that his judicial custody be considered as jail term and to release him on compassionate grounds as the children were very young. However, the prosecution argued that he did not deserve any sympathy and he be given a maximum term of ten years.

Public prosecutor Udaya Kumar argued for the prosecution. It is yet to be seen if the prosecution would go in appeal to the state high court seeking a more stringent punishment be meted out.
