Puttur: In spite of strict orders issued and monitoring conducted, sand extraction continues unabated in various points of river banks in the district.
The departments concerned received a reliable tip-off that sand was being extracted from over a 2-acre expanse on the bank of river Kumaradhara, located near the bridge, under Nekkilady panchayat.
They had received complaints that sand was being piled into mounds during daytime and was smuggled out in the nights to avoid detection.
The team of officials, led by Puttur taluk panchayat CEO Jagadish, joined by Uppinangady deputy tahsildar Sadashiva Naik, PWD junior engineer Madesh, Uppinangady revenue inspector Manjunath, assistant range forest officer Anand Rathod, Uppinangady assistant sub inspector of police Yogindra, Uppinangady village accountant Ramananda Chakkadi, Nekkilady panchayat development officer-in-charge Shantaram and others, in a coordinated effort, stopped the operation.
The workers involved fled the spot when they got a hint of officials approaching. They left behind ten spades and other implements, which, besides the stocked sand, were seized by the officials.
The sand was handed over to the public works department.
