Puttur: Ten Persons Fined under COTPA for Smoking in Public

Puttur: A surprise check was conducted on behalf of the district tobacco control cell within the town limits on Saturday.

Ten persons who were found smoking in public areas as designated under the provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003 or COTPA in short were booked and total fine of Rs 1,750 was levied from them.

Owners of shops and restaurants and other traders were warned of consequences in the event of violations. The team was led by police inspector Mahesh Prasad. Others in the team were area nodal officer Dr Chandrakiran and colleagues.

Many health-conscious citizens told our correspondent that if raids were conducted on rare occasions in this manner, the real problem would not be addressed. Checks on day-to-day basis were necessary.

If not pursued with determination, the campaign would all look like an eyewash and only a cosmetic step to fulfil the required quota of cases.
