Scrum or PMP – Make the Right Choice

Making the right choice between Scrum and PMP is time consuming at times. All we want to know is which of these would lead us to a better future. To come to a decision, we need to be very clear on what these two actually are and how they will help us.


Project Management Professional, famously known as PMP, is an internationally recognized professional designation. The certification is offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI), located at Pennsylvania, United States. According to PMI, PMP is an application of skills, knowledge and techniques to execute projects effectively. PMP works on the waterfall methodology. This methodology came into existence when the software development processes were haphazard and cluttered. There are a number of PMP institutes all over the world. In India, the PMP training in Bangalore is considered the best.


Scrum is a term in rugby used to restart the game after an event that causes the game to be halted. Here, each team opposing each other forms into a human wall trying to kick off the ball on their sides. Scrum is basically based on multiple team work, so is the analogy process of software product development. Scrum, unlike PMP, focuses only on a short, focussed work period called “sprints”. It is an Agile Project Management method.

Differences to note:

  • PMP’s approach is of waterfall methodology while, Scrum is mainly based on the Agile approach.
  • PMP believes in spreading out to the whole process while CSM certification focuses only on one.
  • PMP believes in distinct planning, development and testing phases, while Scrum believes in iterative development stages.
  • PMP focuses mainly on software production in the initial stages while Scrum gathers product features and prioritizes them in the backlog.
  • PMP builds the project product during the build stage, while Scrum takes 2 weeks to test, analyze and build the product in definite sprints.
  • PMP currently enjoys a more elevated status than Scrum in terms of credentials but Scrum presents the prospect of earning more money as it is a narrowed and focused course.
  • The advantages that PMP or the waterfall methodology of software development has to provide are numerous. Every phase has to be complete in every sense before the focus is shifted to the next phase, thus bringing in discipline. While the Scrum approach has the advantage of working in a team at different phases, then co-joining the work of different teams to make the final product.
  • The disadvantages of the waterfall system are due to the same rigid system that provides for its advantages. It certainly doesn’t allow the system to go back, check and revise if any particular mistake has been done or can be improvised. While this acts as another advantage for the Scrum system, its disadvantage is that it is not disciplined enough for practitioners of the waterfall model.

So your choice would ultimately depend on whether you want a credential that is globally accepted or want to be focused in a particular area, and spend small to earn big.
