Bantwal: The case of an alleged love affair between Mohammed Sharif (23) of Kabbinahitlu Kuddupadavu of Kepu village with a 17-year-old girl from K C Road Kalladka saw no solution for three or four days nor would it stay out of limelight.

The young man was spotted moving around with the girl. A group of young men followed them and caught them. While the girl said that they were in love and had intentions to get married, the boy denied it saying that they were only good friends. The girl's side insisted on an immediate marriage, while the boy's side declined.

Nine persons were arrested in connection with the trouble that broke out. Finally, the community leaders, with the help of the police, brokered an agreement between the two families on Tuesday. In accordance with the agreement, the boy shall pay Rs 3.50 lakh as compensation to the girl.

She had not agreed to anything short of marriage initially but during discussions she settled for a compensation. She gave her agreement in writing on Tuesday. Sharif was expected to sign the papers on Wednesday.

Two prominent leaders from Kalladka are said to have taken the lead in getting a settlement agreed upon.
