Puttur: A Maruti car rolled off the state highway 88 at Hantyar-Aryapu on the outskirts on the stretch to Sullia on early Sunday morning. The mishap took place at a curve near the DKZP school at Hantyar.

The highway widening is in progress and the edge of the road is yet to be fitted with railings and safeguards. The car is said to have gone out of the driver's control and rolled into a 15-foot-deep gorge.

The occupants sustained minor injuries. However, they had a providential save as the car got stuck a critical point. If it had moved about four feet further, it would have rolled into a pond full of rain water. They were most likely to meet their watery grave, without any scope for escape, said the police.
