Mangalore: ABVP Against SE Board's Implementation of New Carry-Over System

By Violet Pereira, Team Mangalorean

Mangalore: All India Student Federation (ABVP), staged a protest at the Jyothi Circle by forming a human chain, here on July 20.

Addressing the protesters Chinmay Rai said that in the state, the third and fifth semester students are not allowed to continue their education if failed in more than 4 subjects whereas it was allowed up to 14 subjects earlier. There are no basic facilities in the college like library, laboratory, lack of lecturers and no proper classrooms. He stressed that even private polytechnic colleges follow the same policy. Students are very much disturbed with the present system of carryover. Without bringing to the notice of the students, the polytechnic colleges have implemented the rules. We need the same old entrance system to continue  to the next semester, he opined.

The polytechnic students objected to the new rules that will take away the advantage of the carry over system which is presently practiced. The present system allows the student some leverage to attend the fifth semester exams irrespective of not being able to pass all the subjects in the previous semesters. The sudden changes in carry over system was announced by the colleges on 10 July, after the announcement of the results.  According to the new system the students from 3 or 5 semester who have failed in 4 or less subjects will be allowed to carry over to the the next semester and this was announced before the examination. said, Vinaya Horatti, a activist of ABVP.

The road was blocked for 10 minutes, with all the protesters forming a human chain at Jyothi circle,  and also boycotted the classes showing solidarity with the ABVP.
