Student Takes Collegemates for a Ride, Dupes Over Rs 50 Lakhs

Mangaluru: A Student from a reputed college duping his own collegemates taking money from them after assuring of returning double the amount was reported at Barke police station here on July 22.

The student Vinod has duped over Rs 50 lakhs to his collegemates. Vinod initially had taken Rs 20,000 from one of the students saying that he will pay him Rs 25000 in a month. When the time for returning the amount came, he borrowed Rs 30,000 from another student promising of returning Rs 40,000. Initially, he was returning the money after borrowing it from others with the same promise. Unfortunately, the students were not aware of what he was up to since he made them believe that he was the son of a reputed Jeweller.

On July 21, Vinod had promised to return the money of more than 30 students. When all of them did not get their money, they approached the Barke police. In the police station, Vinod said that he did not have the money now, but assured of paying the money back.

Speaking to mangalorean.com one of the victims, Keerthan said, “Vinod has cheated more than 100 students. He was taking money from us saying that he is the son of a Jeweller and that he has started his business. He was promising to return the money within a month with additional 50%. The way he was convincing us, we never suspected him of cheating. Many of the students, without paying their college fees have given him money thinking that they would get the money back by July 21. On July 21 until 3:00 pm, he said that the money was ready and he would give it to us. But until 8:00 pm we did not receive our money. So we approached the police for justice. When we saw Vinod’s parents in the station we realised that he had cheated us and that his father was not a Jeweller, in fact, he is working in a jewellery shop. We thought we would get some interest and invested the money with Vinod. Now our parents are asking us, we don’t know what to do or how to face our parents without the money they had given us in good faith?”

On July 22, a case was registered against Vinod in the Barke police station.

Vinod was produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody for 15 days.
