Shillong, Oct 1 (IANS) Three people, including two policemen, were killed in Meghalaya’s insurgency-ridden Garo Hills region, a police officer said on Thursday.
“Two unarmed policemen were killed after they were ambushed by Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants on Thursday at Chachatgre area in East Garo Hills district,” Anand Mishra, a district police officer, told IANS.
The dead policemen – Helpingstone Nongkseh and Kundan Dalu – of Meghalaya police battalion were proceeding to Williamnagar, the district headquarters of East Garo Hills from the camp area in Bolkingre.
Mishra said a search operation has been launched by a joint team of Meghalaya’s Special Weapons and Tactics and the Combat Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) commandos to nab the militants involved in the incident.
“Our men are already on the ground and we are hopeful we’ll track them down at the earliest,” he said.
Meanwhile, police recovered a bullet-riddled body of a teenager from Darugre forest in East Garo Hills.
Preliminary reports indicate that the body is suspected to be of Ramsingh G. Momin, who is allegedly a known dacoit in the district, Mishra said.
