Mangaluru: Mayor Harinath, Deputy Mayor Supriya Kariya, MCC Commissioner Dr Gopalakrishna along with other council members visited the Thumbay Dam to access the availability of the water, on April 23.

Addressing the mediapersons Harinath said, “This time Mangaluru is facing a water crisis, this is not created by us but because of less rainfall in the year 2015. Last year there was 50% less rainfall. During the previous years when we came here, the dam was flowing and there was sufficient rainfall in the month of April. But this time, there is no rainfall to date. At present water in the Thumbay Dam is 8.5 ft and in the AMR dam it is 12 meters. We are releasing the water step by step every alternate day so that we can get water for 18 days and from the AMR Dam another 5 days. So the available water now is sufficient for 23 days. We need support from the people”.

He further said that we have appointed Lingegowda as the team head to monitor the flow of water. We have appointed one junior engineer, 5 Assistant engineers and 3 executive engineers for every 3 wards. Earlier during the water crisis, Lingegowda had worked efficiently and he is a well-experienced person to handle such situations. We are expecting rainfall and in the coming days, there will be rains. Already we have civil engineers and electrical engineers to assist us, they will also assist the ward leaders in providing water. People should use the water for their basic needs and not misuse it.

He also said that we have identified 6 places for borewells, 2 borewells are dug in Vamanjoor and Pachanady and will be operational soon. Another four borewells will be dug soon. All the private water sources in the city will be utilized. We will supply water through tankers and already four tankers are deployed to supply water.

When asked why we cannot utilize Gujjarakere by cleaning it, Harinath said that the MLA of Mangaluru South is estimating the cost to carry out modification of the drainage system there.

We are trying to disconnect all illegal lines which the Zilla Panchayat should have done. People have illegally taken many lines but the MLA said that before disconnecting we have to take measures to provide them water.

  1. Why can’t we get basic things like water management, decent roads, safe footpaths and regular garbage collection even in year 2016 ? Remember – this is not due to lack of funds, knowledge or technology. This is purely an end result of ‘third world mindset’!!! On the one hand, we complain about these things. On the other hand, we continue to support the same corrupt, incompetent individuals who failed to address these issues simply because they are from the same religion or caste. We fully deserve everything that’s wrong in city!!!!
