London, Sep 13 (IANS) England football club Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday ended the contract of Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

“We can confirm that we have reached a mutual agreement with Emmanuel Adebayor which will see him released from his contract with the club,” Tottenham said in a statement.

Adebayor has not played for the north London club this season, and had been training with the reserves, but rejected the chance to move before the end of the transfer window, insisting that Spurs pay him the five million pounds left on his contract, reports dailymail.co.uk.

But that issue appears to have been resolved, with the club confirming that the former Monaco, Arsenal Real Madrid player had now been released from the contract.

Adebayor also confirmed his departure on Twitter: “I can confirm that I have reached an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur to terminate my contract. I wish to thank the club and the fans for my time there and I wish them well for the forthcoming season.”

The 31-year-old, who scored 42 times for the club since joining, initially on loan from Manchester City, in 2011, will not however be allowed to sign for another club until January.
