Udupi: Academic at MGM Stays Clear of E-mail Conman’s Trap, Cautions Public Too

Udupi: There are any number of conmen trying to trap gullible people into shady deals and proposals these days. The latest report involves a person who used a method to cheat, which has not been heard in this region.

M Vishwanath Pai, head of the department of Computer Science at MGM College here earlier this week received an e-mail from one Rob Abbey. He conveyed the information that another person of the same name like Pai, his wife and two children had died in a road mishap.

He further said that funds to the tune of US$ 9.60 million belonging to the deceased were lying unclaimed. Abbey gave him an offer that having a similar name Pai could claim all that money. Hence he sought his address and other details.

But Pai, being a computer expert, was already aware of the games the conmen play these days. He did not even bother to send a reply.

Instead, through the media, he has cautioned the public against falling a prey to such tricks.

    Mr. Rob Abbey targetting a PAI, is certainly news – perhaps this Rob
    does not know that the Konkono’s are masters of all trades!

    The Rule of the Thumb for using the WWW is:
    Open and Read only E-mails from known E-mail addresses;
    Never respond to any AD or disclose any info to them
    Never disclose any type of name or number, be it ID, Bank A/C or PAN
    Never respond if if the guise is from a Indian government Agency – No
    Authority corresponds by E-mail – always a letter by Post.
    Even in Malls, do not accept to give your personal info to any shops for any of their
    FREE scheme of OFFERS – they are the ones that share your info to
    all the thieves on the WWW
    Nowadays, one can host a web site for as little as Rs.500.-
    Finally, the WWW is not a safe technology and certainly Microsoft has
    no control over it.
