Udupi: Association Committed to Give Sand to Government Scheme Houses at Reliable Price

Udupi: The Udupi District Sand Mining Labourers Association, which undertakes sand mining using small boats, in a press release have stated that they are committed to give sand to developmental projects and to people constructing houses under government schemes at a reasonable price. They are operating their sand mining activities both in salt and sweet water. The district administration has permitted them to procure sand from salt water with traditional boats.

The district administration has permitted 169 members of the association to conduct sand mining in 18 clusters recognised by the district administration. The deputy commissioner chairs the committee along with 26 other members belonging to the Forest, PWD, Fisheries and Transport departments that implements policies on sand mining.

The government has permitted to carry sand mining activities in traditional boats in the CRZ zone covering Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada by formulating Uniform Sand Mining code. Sand mining activities have created jobs for more than 2000 people.

The association has implemented health care facilities for families and the people working to procure sand. Relief is also provided to the families of deceased laborers.

Sand mining activities will generate revenue of Rs 6 crore for the state government and 25% of the same will be released to the Panchayats under which sand mining operations are undertaken.
