Udupi: International sprint athlete Ashwini Shetty Akkunji, who won Gold Medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and 2010 Asian Games, got engaged to Abhijith Rai, a software professional of Mangaluru, at a private ceremony in Sharadha International Hotel, Udupi here on Thursday, September 24.
Ashwini, daughter of B R Chidananda Shetty and Yashoda Shetty of Siddapura Kundapur, has won gold medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the 2010 Asian Games in the 4×400 relay team. She has also won an individual medal in the 400 meters hurdles at 2010 Asian Games held in China. She is also a recipient of the Karnataka Rajyothsava Prashasthi, a civilian honour awarded by the Government of Karnataka.
Ashwini is presently working as Manager at Corporation Bank, Patiala. She is undergoing training for the upcoming Rio Olympics scheduled to be held during 2016. Her sister Deepthi Shetty is an associate professor in Dr Shivaram Karantha Government College. Her brother Amith Shetty is an entrepreneur.
Her fiancee Abhijith R Rai is a shot-put athlete and has represented Karnataka at national level athletics. He is the son of Amarnath Rai and Shewtha Rai. He holds a Masters degree in Business Management from Sikkim Manipal University and is presently working for Accenture Bengaluru. His sister Arpitha is also an athlete who has won laurels in discuss throw at the national level. His father Amarnath Rai is a former Kabbadi player and presently heads the Kabbadi Association of Mangaluru. His grandfather is Captain Balakrishna Shetty.
Amarnath Rai, father of Abhijith, speaking to the mediapersons said that the marriage dates are not yet fixed but plans are on to hold the marriage ceremony soon after Ashwini’s return from Rio Olympics.
Dignitaries from around the district participated in the engagement ceremony.
