Udupi: In peak months, regular buses scheduled to run on specified routes are diverted by the owners to make unauthorized trips to carry wedding entourage and similar occasions.
This has angered owners and drivers of taxis, maxicabs etc., since the practice eats into their income. Besides, passengers depending on the buses are made to wait for hours.
There have been cases when the taximen’s body acted against such malpractice. In the latest instance, a bus which skipped the route and was on an unauthorized trip to carry a wedding entourage from Manjarapalke to Bantakal was stopped by the transport officials.
On receiving a complaint from the association of taxi owners and drivers of Bantakal, Shirva and Belmannu, the action was taken. It was their argument that if the wedding bus passengers were inconvenience and left in the lurch, it was the responsibility of the bus-owner who violated the rules.
The taxi owners have requested those who book the buses to ensure that the rules are followed.
