Udupi: Casteist Slander and Assault – Jail Sentence and Fine for Acharya Duo

Udupi: The district and sessions court here has sentenced Prasad Vasudeva Acharya (29) and Pravisha Vasudeva Acharya (33) with jail terms and fine for caste-based abuse and assault on Nov 29, 2009.

It was accused that the duo had trespassed into the property of Babu Naik in Ranganakere in Brahmavar Heradi village on that day. They were charged with abusing him with caste-based insults and assaulted him with wooden clubs. They also gave a threat to his life, it was alleged.

A complaint had been filed in the town police station and the then-DySP Jayant Shetty had filed the chargesheet in the court.

The court examined nine witnesses and hearing arguments. It has sentenced the two to three years and nine months’ jail term and fines of Rs 1,700 each. Should they fail to pay the fine, an additional jail term has been prescribed.
