Udupi: Underworld don Bannanje Raja was remanded to police custody for another 7 days on September 8, in relation to a case of attempt to robbery and extortion calls to Anand Shetty, a businessman from Santhekatte. Chief Judicial Magistrate Nagajyothi remanded Raja to police custody. Raja was extradited from Morocco to India on August 14 and brought to Udupi on August 15 to face cases filed against him.
The senior Assistant Public Prosecutor Shanthibai told mediapersons that the police had sought the accused police custody for 14 days, however the Court has consented police custody only for seven days. She said the body warrant for the second case was already issued on Monday and the accused was remanded to judicial custody for 24 hours. The judicial custody ended at 11 am on September 8, and the accused was produced before the court to appeal for police custody.
The Indian and Moroccan governments have agreed that Bannanje Raja would be tried in not more than 16 cases. Of these, four are in Udupi (two at Udupi town station, one each at Malpe and Manipal police stations).
