Udupi: Gowd Saraswat Brahmin Community Vows to Stand by DySP Anupama Shenoy

Udupi: Looks like the district of Ballari – until a couple of years ago Bellary – has to invariably remain in wide focus. With the powerful mining lobby holding the puppet-strings of power, it had earned the tag of a ‘Republic’ in the past decade.

Now it is in the news again. The arena has remained the same. Only the players seem to have changed. A young woman from Paniyoor in Uchila Bada village in Udupi district who built up a career for herself by sheer hard work is reportedly being hounded out by powers-that-be in Ballari.

Daughter of Radhakrishna Shenoy and Nalini of Paniyoor, Anupama Shenoy had always aspired for a police career. Radhakrishna still runs a small refreshment canteen in Uchila. In spite of the resource crunch, the parents gave their three children good education.

Anupama is the eldest, the only daughter. Of the other two brothers, one is a civil engineer and another an electrical engineer working in Dubai.

She had her primary and high school education in St Joseph’s school in Kulshekar in Mangaluru, followed by BSc and MSW studies in St Aloysius College. She also worked as a lecturer in the same college for some time.

Chasing her dream of becoming a police officer, she soon went to Delhi and prepared herself for the UPSC examination. She also appeared for the Karnataka Administrative Service examination. She did not taste success in IPS but cleared the state-level examination in 2012.

She underwent training in Mysuru for a year. During this stint, she won the best rifle-shooting and best woman cadet trophies. She did not fail to recognize her past teachers who had moulded her personality. She ensured their presence at the passing-out ceremony held in the cultural capital of the state.

Following the year-long training, Anupama served as the deputy superintendent of police in Madikeri for about 18 months. She was then transferred to Kudligi in Ballari district. The people of Gollarahalli gratefully recall her efforts in creating awareness against false beliefs.

Many politicians and ministers who are elected for a five-year period, with a pampered ego, tend to assert their clout and power, and go overboard, esp., when it comes to soft targets. Last month, Anupama, as the DySP, received a call from state labour minister Parameshwar Naik.

The conversation was not clear. Also in the meantime since she received an important call from a high police official, she put the minister’s call on hold and attended to the call from her superior.

That was enough for the neta to show his true colours by grabbing the opportunity to show others who the boss was.

He reportedly got her transferred to Indi subdivision immediately. Later reports said that she was asked to proceed on long leave, with no fresh posting notified. Currently she is spending quality time with her parents.

In deference to constraints of service rules, she has tried to stay out of the controversy by being circumspect about it. But her relatives have not hesitated to express their anguish at the raw deal meted out to her.

On the other hand, there has been a backlash from all over the state. The people of Kudligi are up in arms and are seeking the resignation of the said minister.

The opposition parties are using the opportunity to embarrass the government and fishing in troubled waters. Whether they are doing it out of genuine concern for a wronged police officer, an upright woman at that, is a different question.

The damage control process was more ridiculous. Initially, Naik had denied any hand in the transfer. But soon thereafter, he was caught on camera by the media when he boasted at a party workers’ meeting that the transfer was indeed his achievement.

On Sunday, inspector general and director general of police Om Prakash denied in Kalaburagi that she had been sent on long leave but she would soon resume duty. He said that those reports were created by the media. He pointed out that the election time was round the corner and asked as to how a senior police officer could be granted leave at such an exigency period.

Sunday, January 31, witnessed another important development. A team from the Gowd Saraswat Brahmin (GSB) welfare forum of Udupi district paid a visit to the Shenoy house in Uchila. They assured the parents and family members of their full support.

They also pledged to hold a statewide agitation to demand the resignation of the said minister. The team was led by Vivekananda Shenoy and Sanoor Narasimha Kamath.

On the flipside, a relative of Anupama’s, on condition of anonymity, spoke to this writer and expressed concern that the focus on this issue was attaining different angles and larger dimensions. This might indirectly affect her career in the long run, for no fault of hers, the relative said.

It is also surprising that her peers and seniors in the police force have not lent her their support. Informed sources in the police, speaking exclusively, said that some of them only gave a generous advice, asking her to approach the Karnataka Administrative Tribunal with her grievance and washed their hands of the whole matter.

With a twist to the proverbial expression, it can be said that where improbity is bliss, it is folly to be upright.

  1. It’s interesting to see how this report doesn’t even mention the political party behind this episode. Imagine it was a BJP govt!! smiles…

    • Original R. Pai. – “It’s interesting to see how this report doesn’t even mention the political party behind this episode.”

Paimaam, there is no political party behind this. A minister is the wrong doer. But the BJP is politicising this unfortunate incidence. BJP’s action is “the report” that you want.

This politicisation may even cause damage to her carrier. But if BJP comes to power later on, I am sure the BJP may not help her solve the problem caused to her by politicisation.

Oh well. that may well have been due to an oversight – as in the Mangalooru eeeemaaana Nildhana gold smuggling case.

      Read on pyare Rampu:

Her answer still rings in my ears. “Bhaiyya, saawan ke mahine me ek paav daal laye thhe” (Brother, we last bought 250 grams of dal during the rains). I had asked her when was the last time she cooked dal for her family. This was village Mastapur in Tikamgarh district, Madhya Pradesh, which shares its border with Uttar Pradesh, where the pitiless terrain of the old Bundelkhand region extends. I asked this question to every woman I met during this visit. Usually there was an awkward pause followed by a smile or laughter (“don’t you know the price, babuji?”), but not a single woman claimed that her family consumed dal daily or even regularly.

Hundreds of ravenous stray cattle, mostly cows, scourging the field for some straw or tree leaves, announce the arrival of a village. ‘Anna pratha’ (letting off cattle) is an old tradition in Bundelkhand. But villagers tell you that this year the number of cows let loose exceeds anything in the past. As you look at those exhausted, lowing cows, those loud TV debates on cow slaughter and beef consumption begin to sound fake and so removed from the real India. For the cattle, this is slaughter by other means.

  2. Let’s all forget community feeling and support all such issues irrespective of caste, creed. Request GSB community to continue the good work for all good officials.

  3. Where is our collective conscience, when we pride ourselves in being a secular democratic and free society, reports like these raise a lot more questions. I fail to see why ONLY the GSB community should stand by DySp Anupama Shenoy, what about the rest of us? Is she the DySP for the GSB community ONLY? As a DySP wouldn’t she protect all concerned? Why don’t we see it as a fight between the right and wrong?

What has political affiliations got to do with this? The minister should be made to take a lesson in humility, and the electorate should carefully choose their leaders without any bias of caste, creed, community etc. etc. Based on these reports we should ALL stand up for her and fight this moron, who did not come by chance but regrettably by choice to rule over us. If we can’t stand by her and protect her, then how could we expect her and the entire police force to stand by the common man, when they are in dire straights and need the help and support of the police.

Special thanks to the Press for high lighting these issues and bringing it to the public. Please continue the good work, you’ll play an important part in exposing these issues which would otherwise been swept under the carpet.

  4. Sincere and honest Police officers have no place in the present corrupt system. It’s not the question of Congress or BJP, its the system which is rotten and corrupt. Every citizen of this state should support DySP Anupama Shenoy, irrespective of caste, creed and political affiliation.

  5. Why only GSB’s?
We, all the citizens also stand behind her for humiliation by politicians. It is unfortunate that they, the politicians do not have a code of conduct.

    • On the electronic media, I heard that the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Ms. Anupama Shenoy, who was transferred for keeping an uncouth and crude politician on hold for 41 or 42 seconds has been reinstateed due to the media pressure and expose.

It is not just GSB but people from all divide were sympathetic to Ms. Anupama Shenoy. If people unite, their power can force them to work and be accountable.

Amongst all professions, politics is the worst profession, because in India politicians are corrupt, thick-skinned, lack decency and decorum and feel that they are a superior breed by themselves. This is because people do not unite and hold politicians accountabe for their actions and misdeeds.

  6. It’s interesting to see how this report doesn’t even mention the political party behind this episode. -Atheist Mr.Original Pai

Sir,Offering sympathy and expressing condolence with the Rohith Vemula Dalit scholar suicide Venkaiah Naidu accuses Congress of indulging in ‘tamasha’ politics. It was only after Rahul Gandhi remarked in his speech – ” will such small people rule the country now” referring to Narendra Modi that BJP made the fact of Modi being from OBC class a campaigning issue.

Imagine a police officer refusing to guard a Sikh temple, give a presentation on safety and crime prevention at a Catholic elementary school, conduct foot patrols in a neighborhood with a large Orthodox Jewish population, or come to the aid of an injured woman wearing a hijab.

The duty of officer is Protecting and Serving All, Regardless of Faith.Duty to Protect and Serve, Not Proselytize.

Original Pai mama, want to justify the cobrapost sting operation regarding saffronisation of police.BJP/RSS had made a lot of noise against the Mandal Commission, but they used the OBC classification of Narendra Modi to acknowledge his humbleness during elections. Was this a contradiction or vote-bank politics?

    Jai Hind

  7. “that may well have been due to an oversight,,,” writes joker Praveena Pinto before reproducing his daily output of gibberish.

Oversight, uh? LOL How convenient to skip ruling party’s name, right? If it was someone associated with RSS or VHP, the report would have begun and ended with many references to ‘kesari’ terrorism and cheap-shots at Sri Modiji!!! Yes – Oversight!! LOL At least, Pincode Pai is honest enough to admit his bias – he doesn’t see any political party behind this incident!!

@ Taqiyya artist – What are you talking about? This report is not about Rohita Vemula. You are like a broken record!! By the way, what’s the status of minorities in your Saudi and other ‘peaceful’ societies?

  8. For and on behalf of GSB Community in Kerala, I herewith convey our full support to Ms. Shenoy.

    • Mr. Pai, you are most welcome to support the victim of unjust, unruly and egoistic action of Labor Minister. Please note that every fair-minded person will condemn such behavior irrespective of communal or political party affiliation. It is not necessary to highlight the support of Kerala GSB community simply because the victim belong to that community. We all, including GSB, Christian, Muslim, Dalith etc., should stand united and see that such egoistic behavior is not tolerated in a democratic country, where the Constitution explicitly provide checks and balances among Legislative, Judiciary and Administrative branches of the Govt.

Can a Judge or Police Chief transfer a Minister from Labor Ministry to Ministry of Justice, per se, for reasons as simple as hanging up the phone, without proper inquiry?
