Udupi: Riders Severely Injured as Bike Crashes into Median near Hejamady

Udupi: Harshal Shetty (20) of Nadsalu and Vighnesh Prabhu (20) of Nagaraj Nagar in Padubidri, were severely injured when a two-wheelers they travelled in crashed into a median of the dual carriageway at Shivanagar near Hejamadi on Monday night.

They were on their way from Padubidri towards Mulki. Prabhu’s father’s lorry had stopped in Kinnigoly as its tank had gone dry. They were on their way to fetch diesel from a filling station in Mulki.

Both of them are said to have sustained severe injuries in the head and are in the ICU of a private hospital in Mangaluru. Harshal is lying in an unconscious state.

This mishap has brought to the fore the necessity of wearing helmets by both riders. Ironically, it has taken place when the Road Safety Week is being celebrated.

Also ironical is the fact that there is opposition to the implementation of the order making the helmets compulsory when so many deaths of two-wheeler-riders are being caused by head injuries by being thrown to the hard road surface.
