Udupi: S U Paniyadi Award for Best Tulu Novel Won by ‘Oyl’ by Shakuntala Bhat

Udupi: ‘Oyl’, a Tulu novel by Shakuntala Bhat Haleyangadi, has been chosen for this year’s S U Paniyadi Award for new unpublished novels. (Loosely translated, ‘oyl’ is the force of a flow, like that of a stream.)

For the last 20 years, Tulukoota Udupi has been giving this award with a view to encouraging creation of new novels in Tulu. As usual, this year too, it had invited fresh novels still in manuscript format.

The panel of jury was made of noted Tulu writer Dr Katyayani Kunjibettu, journalist Puttige Padmanabha Rai and Sulochana Kodavoor.

The award carries a cash purse of Rs 8,000 and a citation. The award will be presented in Udupi on August 15, say award function convener Nandakumar and Tulukoota Udupi president Indrali Jayakar Shetty, in a media release.

The award bears the name of the late Srinivas Upadhya Paniyadi, who was the pioneer novelist in Tulu. His daughter Harini is a yesteryear Kannada and Tamil heroine, the late son Vadiraj was a comedian and producer and another son Jawahal was a producer who worked under their home banner. Together they had made some award-winning movies a few decades ago.
