Udupi: Sorkala Shirva Resident Jumps off Udyavar River, Untraced, Feared Dead

Udupi: A group of youngsters who were angling for fish by the side of the Udyavar bridge on the national highway on Friday evening happened to spot a man suddenly jump into the river from the other side.

They immediately rushed to rescue him but he appeared to have already disappeared in water. Police from Katapady arrived and they also sought the help of the fire brigade.

Lack of suitable rescue equipment and poor light prevented them from tracing him. His identity as Alphonse Fernandes (60) of Sorkala Shirva was known as hd was found to have left behind his mobile, a silver bracelet and some petty cash on the edge of the bridge.

The search operation continued on Saturday. It is feared that the body may have been washed downstream towards the sea.
