Udupi: While the battle is on for legislative assembly polls, the efforts held to put rest to the battle of indifferences between Congress leaders seems to be in vain. Former ZP president Bhujanga Shetty, a veteran congress leader, has decided to contest as an independent candidate after being allegedly stumped by senior Congress leaders.

Addressing a press meet, Bhujanga Shetty said that he a long stint of 30 years in the Congress party. But having worked obediently and loyally towards the growth of party, the party leadership does not seem to be interested in promoting young leaders.

“Pratap Chandra Shetty, the present MLC, had announced that he would not be contesting in the legislative assembly polls but the senior leaders want Pratap to contest, which has hurt the sentiments of Congress party workers.”

“Both the national parties have nominated only 1 candidate while there are two seats. After Pratap Chandra Shetty announced that he would not be contesting the MLC polls, the district Congress sent a list of candidates interested to contest in the polls. Ten members were listed by the district Congress and the list was sent to KPCC. Pratap Chandra Shetty had not applied but he has been given the ticket while the members who had applied for the MLC seat are not even recognised.”

Bhujanga also said that the senior leaders could have consulted the members who had applied for the MLC seat but they don’t want the growth of the party in Udupi district. “I have decided to contest independently and if the party wants to sack me, I will move out with the party workers. Former MP Jayaprakash Hegde will also soon announce his decision,” he added.

Kota Block Congress president Shanker Kunder said that he has been working with the party since 35 years. “While Veerappa Moily was the Chief Minister, he had promised to appoint me as the president of the Fisheries Board but it was given to the person suggested by Vasanth Salian. Senior Leaders are not allowing young leaders to grow. I will support Jayapraskah Hegde and Bhujanga Shetty, if they contest for polls,” said Kunder.

Kota Block Youth Congress president Prathwiraj Shetty, Sudarshan Hegde and Godwin Menezes were present.
